Forshadowing of things to come... [the escalator halting. And it was humorous the way they looked around, looking for a culprit.]It was embarrassing.
(The speech, not the escalator thing that made me laugh)
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for the arrest of those responsible for the failure of the escalator at the UN headquarters, which broke down when the president and his wife, Melania, were riding it on their way to the General Assembly hall where he was to deliver a speech. The stoppage of the escalator, along with other incidents such as the teleprompter breakdown, allowed him to joke on Tuesday in the speakers' gallery about the poor state of maintenance of the facilities of the United Nations headquarters – and how much the organization lost by not awarding his company a renovation contract before it jumped into politics. but this Wednesday the president has gone further in his grievance through a post on his Truth Social platform.
"Yesterday [Tuesday] a REAL SHAME took place at the United Nations: not one, not two, but three very sinister events! First, the escalator leading up to the main speech hall came to a screeching halt. He stopped in his tracks. It's amazing that Melania and I didn't fall flat on our faces on the sharp edges of these steel steps. It was only because we both held on tightly to the railing that a catastrophe did not occur." Trump has no doubts about the intentionality of what happened. "This was undoubtedly sabotage, as pointed out by a report the previous day in The London Times, which claimed that UN workers were 'joking about turning off an escalator'. Those responsible should be arrested!" cries Trump in Truth, a punishment that the White House press secretary already advanced the day before.
Trump's long post then addresses the breakdown of the teleprompter, which left room for improvisation, although the duration of the speech (57 minutes, four times the scheduled time) also forced him to read part of it on the pages he was carrying. "Then, while I was in front of a television crowd of millions around the world and important leaders in the room, my teleprompter didn't work. It was completely dark. I immediately thought: 'Wow, first the escalator and now a teleprompter that doesn't work. What kind of place is this?' So I proceeded to give a speech without a teleprompter, which started working about 15 minutes later," Trump says. Note the order chosen to speak of his audience: first "the television crowd of millions" and then, then, the leaders present in the room, some 140 leaders from around the world.
Tribute for himself as usual, the US president celebrates in the post, despite these two setbacks, the good reception of his speech: a belligerent message and contrary to all the principles of the organization to which he was addressing. "The good news is that the speech has received fantastic reviews. Perhaps they appreciated the fact that very few people could have done what I did," he stresses of a speech received with astonishment and disbelief by the room and most of the participants in the 80th General Assembly.
