The world of TV and Film has lost Robert Redford

The second great man with an alliterative name lost this year so far (Ozzy Osborne was first). Enjoyed his work. RIP.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid used to circulate through the cinemas every year for most of the seventies here in Oz. Best double bill ever, with MASH. Always enjoyed seeing Redford and Newman, Gould and Sutherland in the same room.

I liked Butch Cassidy as a movie better, but I think I liked Redford more in the Sting than I did in Butch Cassidy. I have to admit I do like the scene with Redford and Katharine Ross.

I don’t know but I always thought that RR was always ‘acting’ the character and I never got the sense of him ‘being’ the character. I know that this will be an unpopular opinion, particularly with some of the ladies, but it is what it is. My sympathy, however, goes to his family, friends and loved ones.

A scene with Redford in Butch Cassidy.

"The Atlantic City New Jersey of all Bolivia."

In the seventies, I was working for a small weekly newspaper in Maine that had an outsized voice in the environmental movement, because the editor had written some environmentalist books. There was a controversial dam (in Maine) being considered at the time. Redford called the paper, hoping to talk to the editor. The editor was out, but his middle aged female assistant talked to Redford for ten or fifteen minutes. By her account, he was thoughtful, kind and passionate about the issue, not at all snooty. And he was well informed and understood both sides of the argument. She was on cloud nine for about a week. If she is still alive, dubious given the age, I bet she still remembers that call.
