Um, what is this, please?I can't believe you've gone through an entire tangent and no one has yet mentioned the mainstream almost-example:

That makes sense but also is slightly disappointing. You seem to have chosen the best frame from that movie.Wild Wild West.
Hardly. This one doesn’t even feature Salma Hayek. That makes sense but also is slightly disappointing. You seem to have chosen the best frame from that movie.
Your story is alredy on my must read list and I will get to it. I did buy the Deadlands RPG but never played it. The rules seemed overly complicated, but the setting was terrific. I adapted it into my Palladium system without difficulty and it was a tremendous success. My recent summer story might be within the realm of what you're looking for, Dandelion Greene and the Witch of Watson County. It's more Appalachian than Western, but it's got folklore and superstition and "fearsome critters," which is what they called cryptids back in the day!
SF&F doesn't seem to have a very huge audience these days unless you're writing a loooonnggg established series, but I've gotten pretty good engagement and comments on it! This was just a short piece, but I have pages of notes for potential stories in the same setting, there's just so much material to work with
The Deadlands RPG was from before my time and I've never played it, but I've seen it referenced a lot and most of the lore is available online, and it's got some fascinating content.
@RudelyAbrupt commented on my story to recommend the work of Manly Wade Wellman (that really was his name, amazing) who wrote a lot of Appalachian pulp horror.
I highly recommend the movie Bone Tomahawk, which is a horrific Lovecraftian nightmare disguised as a classic western.
The HBO series Deadwood also feels like a good source of inspiration, it's not Weird West but it's gritty and strange and surprisingly funny!
