I'm not sure how to title this thread.

But does anyone else come up with story ideas in their heads to write down later at times when it's inappropriate?

Like I'm at work, and I'm envisioning a scene in something I want to create later at home. Or it's to extend a piece I've been stuck on/writers block and the words come to me while I'm driving somewhere.

Is that a me thing or does that happen to anyone else?

I had a similar experience a few years ago when I was writing the story 'Tonya, Tiffany & the Twins', a slacker/surfer dude comedy similar to movies like this popular circa 1987-1994 and accordingly set in 1989.

Before work one morning I wrote a scene in which the grumpy, long-suffering husband/father goes to New York for work, and gets into a fight with a clown (a literal clown running late for a party booking) over a cab, the bad-tempered and abrasive clown pushing the angry father out the way and calling him a 'Goddamn fucking asshole,' before riding away in the cab.

On my way to work the scene kept playing in my head like a movie, and I just could not stop myself laughing, people looked at me like I was crazy.

Anyway, in response your original post... happens to me all the time. Sometimes I remember what the thought was later long enough to write it down. Sometimes, not. I always figure if it lasts long enough to remember it later, it's worth pursuing.

Oddly enough, just today I was thinking about writing a story about a fellow masturbating in his pants and riding home with his wife uncomfortable with the sticky feeling in his underwear.

Quite often. Sometimes at night after I've gone to bed. Sometimes when I am in the kitchen and cooking. After forgetting many of them, I now text the ideas, sometimes full sentences, to my email.

I've had the same experience, except at work.

The only problem with having that experience at work is the inability of concentrating on the work you need to get done at that moment. If you're in a meeting... it's not convenient to write your ideas in a notes app on the phone. Argh.

My primary job is technical so not much story work gets done there, but my part-time job is manual labor for the exercise and the extra cash. Many of my stories get their start and often a lot of plot development there, but many others are already forgotten by the time I get somewhere I can write them down!
