Tariffs, aka taxes, in action - auto edition

Trump’s own volatility works against the protectionist impact of his tariffs.

As Chloe pointed out, manufacturers would need to know that protectionist tariffs will be stable for the long term before committing hundreds of millions to build new factories here. But nobody can count on Trump to be consistent about anything for more than two weeks.

I think we’ll see plenty of companies announce new factories to get favorable treatment from Trump, but actual construction will always be “two weeks” away.
Yes, everybody knows what he wants - a headline for his stupid supporters - & so he's being played by all the countries & companies while they laugh at how easy it is.

Another case of premature emasculation or is it just incontinence - we know he shits himself constantly.
Poor little Donny is so scared he trembles and pees himself too

Funny that American leftists always say, "Well, socialism works in Europe!"
It does not, actually. But they think it does because of the insanely high tax rates. They have Value Add Taxes (VAT) so that consumers/rich pay even more to support useless/migrants. Countries like Norway have $2trillion in wealth from gas and Germany has benefit of enormous economy built by Marshall Plan and subsidized by US/Nato bases saving them from having to spend on their own defense (see Japan and South Korea).

Exporting American manufacturing jobs took decades. Turning that around is a slow and stumbling process as we navigate global issues and surprises and rebuilding our labor pool. Some of that is inevitable as rising fuel prices make shipping unaffordable, but we are limited in what we can do here with what's left of America's resources. We won't have the growth of 1950s suburbia. There will be decisions of doing what we can with what we have, and scrapping or abandoning what costs too much to maintain.

Funny how “Europe’s socialism doesn’t work” always skips the part where those countries outrank us in health, education, and life expectancy. How easily we gloss over facts that don't make us look good.

They’re not socialist—they’re social democracies: capitalist markets plus public services people actually use. Higher taxes there buy universal healthcare, college, and infrastructure, as Americans, we often overpay for private healthcare, college, and infrastructure. Norway’s oil wealth? Managed into a $2T fund instead of being squandered. [Where is our wealth fund, Bubba?] Germany’s postwar boost? Sure—but US bases didn’t invent Mercedes-Benz.

And the “useless/migrants” jab? Migrants fill jobs, pay taxes, and keep pensions afloat. Meanwhile, we sit near the bottom of developed nations in healthcare rankings—and Trump’s new budget slashes healthcare funding even further. If that’s “winning,” it’s the kind where the trophy is an unpaid medical bill. Funny thing about reality—it keeps working even if you shout at it.

I mentioned education above, but it would need more elaboration to counter the criticism of European nations regarding education.

In much of Europe, public universities charge little or no tuition — not just for citizens, but often for international students too. Norway, Germany, France, Scotland, and others treat higher education as a public investment, not a debt trap. Students graduate without decades of loan payments hanging over their heads.

Meanwhile in the U.S., the average college grad leaves school with around $30,000 in debt, and many owe far more. Defaults are climbing, repayment programs are overwhelmed, and young Americans delay buying homes, starting families, or even basic healthcare because of loan burdens. We call it “freedom,” but it’s the kind that comes with a bill you can’t escape. Europeans make use of their educations without those ankle shackles of debt around them.

Right now, as I think of it, were I a parent, I might be looking at sending my kids overseas for an education. Even as an American student, the costs seem to be significantly lower. Wonder how that would work out?

I see it as a return to normalcy. :)
So why were you so bothered by the "hate from liberals" just a few comments ago?

Exhibit A of when Republicans wanting to have it both ways. They accuse others of things without facts, and yet when confronted by facts they claim victimhood.

Europe's systems used to work because they had homogeneous societies with social contracts. White Europeans who got sick were supported by white Europeans who could work. That is no longer the case.
Migrants do not work in Europe. They live on crime and benefits. Have you even visited Paris? Find me a Frenchman. Find me a white girl who can walk the streets at night or ride a bus without a swarm of migrants on her.

Seems more than Democrats. There are others here that spew that as well, 'your' guys or just acquaintances here. ;)

Maybe we should get back to discussing why you hate Trump for his tarriffs. :)

I don’t have to have stood on a Paris street at night watching the ‘white girls’ to know your bias is on full display. Your tropes are as prejudiced as the slurs you’re tossing here. A simple data search indicates migrants fill most of Europe’s new jobs, and crime patterns don’t change color based on who’s committing them. If your view of Europe fits neatly inside your own bubble, maybe it’s time to step outside — physically and mentally.

Right now, your arguments are like the cheap souvenirs hawked outside the Eiffel Tower — flimsy, mass-produced, and passed off as something genuine. And just like those knock-offs you probably bought thinking they were the real deal, your claims are just false equivalences dressed up as truth.

This is classic denialism. Take a fact, twist it to obscure the underlying truth, claim to be an expert without having any personal knowledge, and finally declare yourself superior to everyone in your belief of yourself.
