When do you bail out of a thread?

Most question based threads are essentially finished by the end of the second page, sometimes the first. Discussion topic threads might go 4 or 5 pages.

I find that beyond there, not much is worthwhile. Sometimes I'll read a bit farther to see if anything changes. Usually by 6 or 7 pages, I've unsubscribed. Yes, there are exceptions like the contest threads, but even they get repetitive after a few pages.

I try to bail when it gets repetitive or argumentative. I mean, I click the unwatch button, but I can't help peeking just one more time.

It's a matter of mileage, probably. After a couple of years of AH experience, you notice that there's an indomitable cycle of repetition. Same threads, same people making the same arguments, over and over again, so you get tired more quickly and bail out earlier. Occasionally, a fresh topic arises, and those discussions tend to be livelier, but they are also somewhat rare.

I've a feeling that most of the veteran AH-ers still participate in these threads for the people they got used to interacting with, rather than for expecting to hear new arguments and wisdom.

Every now and then, someone comes along with a surprise or two or three, which makes it worth while, especially if they stick around. The drive-through/flit-through rate is much the same as it's always been, and the frequency of grand arrivals and ignominious departures, same.

It becomes something comfortable, like a coffee in the morning and marmalade on your toast, and putting your feet up at night, with the cat by the fire.

I mean, how thankful are you for my presence alone? If I weren't around to rant and criticize, you guys would drown in all the boring positivism and fluffing. 😁

No, no. I don't need any thanks. Well, maybe something symbolic, say, an official award carrying my name, given only to exceptional ranters.

When I say what I feel I need to. I'd say more often than not I don't return to a thread at all, even if someone quotes me. Some threads I might post more because I'm replying to specific people, but I generally won't keep going and going.

Honestly, if you look at most threads that ask a specific question about rules, categories, rejections, things like that. The answer comes within the first couple of replies. After that it's just everyone feeling compelled to give the same answer they've given countless times before. Then the thread derails into the topic being all about them and we go from there.

That's my experience from threads I post in. A lot of threads I pass on through lack of interest, maybe lack of knowledge on that topic or the fact I'm too tired of the subject to contribute. I do see others like that, but many who seem incapable of letting anything go by without chiming in.

I'm standing right here, and you badmouth me like that!!!

For me it depends on the subject. Some question threads I don't get past the first post or two, for many different reasons: disinterest, nothing to contribute, the question elicited a WTF? from me, or I figure others have a better grasp of a good answer. Somme I follow to the end because I do have something to offer and want to see what others come up with. Same with a discussion thread. It all depends on if it interests me.

As noted, after a year or so some things get repetitive. Even then, there might be a nugget of new wisdom I can learn, so I'll trudge through the repeats to search for the gold.

Comshaw

I don't subscribe to threads--even threads I start--and I hardly ever stay with threads. I make exceptions for TxRad's coffee house and maybe for contest threads if the community is interesting. I come and go. I could re-enter an old thread if the topic changes, or I could just roll my eyes and scroll on.

I only follow our review thread and my event threads. Everything else, I peek in and if I have something to say, I’ll say it. Sometimes I check a question thread to see that it’s been answered, and if so, I move on. I don’t have a policy.

Well, don't erase it!!!! Cum on, dude or dudette, give a girl a break.
Whenever I'm having a terrible day, I always assume no one wants to hear about it.

There have been a number of times where I went in there, typed up a whole big assed post, felt a little better and erased it.

Please do. I can't be the only person bitching about my bad days. I quit my own thread for lack of participation, like no one had a bad day, week, month, year, or life. LOL
Umm, maybe next time I won't.

Eh, I'll try to at least say something next time I'm having a bad day.
