I have a really hard time picturing a country, any country, that bombs the shit out of civilians and expands and expands and expands into territories it then calls by its own name, as 'victims'. We hear it from other countries, not just Israel, and almost exclusively call these governments by their true labels.

Israel is the only country I am aware of whose right to exist is contested by violent people.

This is a pretty specious take, even for you.
Netanyahu has only been able to hold on to his reins of power by convincing the Israeli public by the slimmest of margins that he is a quote wartime president unquote. It was in his best interest (NOT Israel's best interest) to prolong the conflict in Gaza as long as he possibly could. His fragile coalition contained two very bellicose factions (Russian orthodox Jews and the West Bank Israeli terrorists (called "settlers") who believe that the purpose of the Israeli government is to purge the Middle East of all Arabs.

Netanyahu knows the moment the war stops, Israeli West Bank terrorist chief and current Israeli minister of finance Bezalel Yoel Smotrich will throw him under the bus and assume power.

The only difference between the two war mongers is that Netanyahu is smart enough to not threaten to use Israeli nuclear weapons. Smotrich is one of the few Israelis alive worse that Netanyahu.

The Israelis will do what they need to do to defeat those who are trying to destroy them. They cannot compromise those who think this way:

Now I admit I had no fucking clue who this "Khaled Mashal" guy was (if you were honest, you'd admit the same) so I googled his name and read some fascinating stuff.

Khaled Mashal was head of the Hamas political board, in charge of stirring up hatred and animosity towards Israel (a position not unlike Stephen Miller does for Donald Trump.

In 1994, the Israeli government decided that Mashal needed to die.

They could not reach him in Gaza, so they waited until Mashad travelled to Jordan to meet with Jordan's King Hussein.

Four Mossad agents, at the direction of then-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, were issued false Canadian passports by the Israeli government and entered Jordan. Although Mashal was surrounded by a security phalanx, a single Mossad agent got close enough to fire a dart gun that hit Mashal directly in the neck.

The dart contained a particularly lethal slow acting poison, one that ensured a slow agonizing death. Israel obviously wanted to "send a message".

King Hussein was spectacularly offended by this gross violation of diplomatic courtesies by the Israelis.

He publicly demanded that Israel provide an antidote for Mashal.

Netanyahu said nope, not gonna do it.

King Hussein countered that unless Israel provided an antidote immediately, Hussein would consider the hard fought Jordan-Israel peace agreement to have been egregiously violated unilaterally and therefore null and void.

Netanyahu still said nope.

King Hussein gave then-President Bill Clinton a courtesty call, indicating that he was assembling armor and air force units to invade Israel. This likely would start an immense Middle Eastern conflict but Arab honor was at stake.

Clinton begged Hussein to wait just 12 hours.

A couple of phone calls later Netanyahu sheepishly and reluctantly handed over the poison's antidote to the Jordanian ambassador.

I wonder to this day exactly what President Clinton said to make Netanyahu fold faster than Superman on laundry day.

Mashal is reportedly still alive and living somewhere in retirement in the Middle East.

Not from what I've seen. BDS appears to me to be a rather simple attempt by governments, businesses and individuals to hold Israel responsible for their actions.

These actions upset delicate Israeli feelings and therefore falls under the umbrella of the new 'n improved massively expanded definition of "antisemitism".

BTW, speaking of "holding Israel responsible", did you see what China did recently? China's largest EV manufacturer, BYD, is fast becoming the worlds largest producer of EVs (They surpassed Tesla in exports in 2024).

BYD and other Chinese manufacturers have grown so fast that they've been forced to import critical components of their vehicles. Israel had a small but growing design/build/fabricate electronic components industry. One of the Israeli companies carved out a niche creating hundreds of thousand electronic safety device assemblies for EVs. They were the sole-source provider for Chinese EVs. Win-win, right?

Then came the 'pager affair'. Israel's Mossad created a "reseller" of pagers made by Chinese firm Gold Apollo in Hungary that sold pagers exclusively in the Middle East. When a bulk order for pagers came in from Lebanon, The Israel Hungarian front modified an entire shipment of pagers to detonate on a given signal, since the Hezbollah organization was switching back over to pagers from easily hacked cellphones.

The armed pagers detonated as planned in two waves, killing 12 people (8 Hezbollah operatives, and at least one child of a Hezbollah operative who was bringing daddy's buzzing pager to him) and maimed another 2700 people.

The people of Israel rejoiced, as they do every most time an Arab dies at the hand of Israel. The rest of the world was once again sickened by the complete disregard for innocent civilian lives.

Life went on.....but this time Israeli government actions resulted in the ultimate rarity: actual consequences. BYD, under orders from the Chinese government, immediately cancelled their contract with their Israeli manufacturer, deciding that any country that would put high explosives into pagers probably could and likely would do the same thing for, say, electronic safety devices in EVs.

The Israeli that manufactured EV electronic safety components went bankrupt as a result.

Five hundred Israelis lost their jobs.

Consequences, who could have guessed?

As an aside, we all know that had Hezbollah done something similar to Israel (think: booby-trapping Israeli cell phones), we know what the Israeli-driven mainstream press would label this: a terrorist attack.

And one further insult to Israel: Chinese EVs purchased by the Israeli IDF were found last week to be transmitting location data via satellite to China

If what you are saying is true, I do not care, any more than you care about Israelis suffering from Palestinian terrorism. We have each chosen sides. We want our side to win.

It is clear to me that the Israelis and the Palestinians hate each other. Therefore there cannot be a two state solution. Nor can there be a one state solution, with the Jews and the Palestinians living together with equal rights protected by law.
