How about adding the word count to each category New page?

I have to click in to see how many words. Its it over 7 or 8K, I click back out without reading any at all. That gives the author a false view count total.

If it was on the new page, I'd know it's more than that and I wouldn't click in to begin with.

Maybe that's why the story side is down at the moment.

Anything to increase clicks puts more money in the account. I'm surprised they even put the category or even the story title in the new stories list ... :nana:
There's a balance, because if it gets too irritating people migrate to Substack or AO3 or Wattpad.

We have been asking for word count since the dawn of time in various threads, even in the thread that Laurel linked. It's good to know that they do read most of the stuff we post here... and then choose to ignore it. ;)

The only time I hesitate to read a story with a long word count is when I know I don't have time AND the story is over 20k words. If it has a good score, and/or is by an author I like, I'll come back to it as soon as I can.

I know this falsely increases views. A view is not a read. I also return to a story I read previously to read comments. Occasionally I do this from my user page where I look at comments after I made my own.

I hope Laurel knows my tongue was firmly planted in my cheek ...

I think it is really heartening that she is at least checking in on this forum, at least some of the time.

I'm not sure I understand that other thread though.

No problem! The tl;dr version of Manu's post from last June:

Some readers think our current Story Cards are too big while others think they're too small.

So, we created three versions of the story card.

The first is the regular Story Card you see on the site right now, which looks like this:
storycard.png

The second is the Condensed Version for people who want a smaller card, which will look like this:
condensedstorycardlit-png.2359767

The third is the Expanded Card, which will look like this:
expandedstorycardlit-png.2359769

The Word Count will appear on the Expanded Card (the last option) once these are rolled out sitewide. Because Story Games don't contain a Word Count in their stats, you can't see it now - so Manu posted a prototype of how it will look for text stories.

These are on the site now in the Story Games section. They are being tested in the Story Games section, as Manu explained, because "[t]esting on Story Games allows us to try new features on a smaller audience instead of risking breaking things for millions of daily Lit Readers."

If you want to help us beta-test the new Story Cards, please follow Manu's instructions here. Once these are tested and bug-fixed, anyone who wants to see the Word Count in a story can choose the Expanded Cards. (y)

Wait, it has taken a whole year for you to move from showing a prototype story card to the beta-testing phase? And the prototype story card merely shows two more stats in comparison to the old one. Come on, this is the work of a couple of days at most.
Anyway, when is this upgrade due to come out? 2048?

I really hope you kept a better pace in the past. Otherwise, that would mean that Literotica is the project your grandparents had started in the days before the transistor was invented.

Alternative post:

Hey Laurel, thanks for popping by to clarify this! It's been on many people's wishlist for a long time, so it's nice to see it's happening. I could add a sarcastic "finally" here, but you're probably very busy running this site where I get to play around for free, writing stories (when I have time and energy - that seems to be something we have in common, haha!) and posting on the forums. So thanks for doing this, and keep up the good work!

I'm not sure what surprised you there, to be honest.
Everything is as it always has been. I am ranting, as usual, you are kissing ass, as usual, and sooner or later, someone is going to provide a balanced view, so we'll have all the bases covered. ;)

I'm not surprised. I'm not kissing arse. I just don't see the value in being deliberately rude to someone who's providing you with a free service, just because that free service isn't tailored to your own personal experience.

Oh, my post has nothing to do with Literotica being or not being tailored to my needs. I just can't not reply to what I see as another round of BS from our reclusive website owners. And even the timing is convenient.

Balanced view...

As a thirty year veteran of developing enterprise level software, I'd suggest you at least pretend to know what you're talking about. This is a massive site with, from what I can tell, one technical resource. There are things like priority, criticality, functional importance, cost to benefit ratios. These all come into play when determining which features to turn on and off. To you this may seem like something simple. It's not. How many places are these cards used? What are the data points available in each use case? What back end changes need to happen to turn this on site wide? What other changes are being looked at and tested at the same time? What unforeseen effects will this have? What's it going to cost to fix if it breaks something Manu didn't think about?

Absolutely, you are ranting. That's your right. I'd suggest, however, that your time might be better spent resetting your expectations for a FREE site.

No one is forcing you to be here. If you can't stand how things are run here, maybe you should find somewhere else to inhabit.

I never said I couldn't stand the way Literotica functions. I sometimes support its actions and sometimes I criticize. I can be harsh in my criticism occasionally, but that can hardly offset all the over-the-top praise that some members offer.

By the way, you can take your own advice when it comes to you and my criticism. If you don't like it, there's this little button named Ignore. Feel free to use it.

That's hard to believe, as this is quite obviously a frontend issue. The numbers we want story-cards to display are already displayed on other pages. They are displayed statically, the same as other stats, as they are only refreshed from the database at certain periods during the day. So this is only about the way the story card is shown in HTML - whether it displays properly, or whether it would break the page view in some way.

I suggest to you too to first take your own advice before you criticize my supposed ignorance, veteran.
