I happen to know a partner in the group that owns this (and other NYC) hotels. They were showered with money to do this. They made way more than they could have with regular tourists and it was cash on the barrelhead. They just had to ignore the drugs, prostution, trafficking and violence. But hey, they got unbelievable returns, so, there's that.

I'm well aware. I spent '23 doing some work for a studio about two blocks from there. a co worker got pelted with glass bottles one night from some lovely people happy to be on a free land. among other things I saw and experienced just commuting was enough to make me let that job go. Used to be such an affluent area of the city.

Ditto. I worked not far from there in 2000s and then saw on the news what it looks like now/then with Venezuelan gangs using whatsapp to rob women (only women, btw). They would look for single women and rob them using motorbikes. They would also use scams to lure gays and trans to rob them too. and these are the people liberals will stand on a hill and die for. Sad and hilarious.
