A person is born Jewish because they are born of a Jewish mother who’s born of a Jewish mother and so on.
Judaism is a religion. Religions involve faith and belief. Whether it's the same as other religions isn't something I'm disputing. Whether actual jews participate in their faith isn't something I'm disputing.
Judaism is best understood as an ethnicity. It's an ethnicity that happens to have its own religion--a religion which unfortunately was used by the Christians and the Muslims to base their cults on, which leads a lot of people to assume they can apply what they know about religion from Christianity and Islam to make claims about Judaism, instead of just listening to Jews.
There are also matriarchal blood lines, DNA that connects Jews to other Jews throughout the world and throughout time, at least the past few thousand years.
