He is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. The difference between a socialist and a communist is only a matter of degree. The leftist refrain goes something like this; “He’s not a communist, he just wants the government to control your housing, your transportation, your food supply, and your income. Yes, I keep reading the same thing from landlords in NYC. I feel it's speculative overheated rhetoric, with a side order of sour grapes.
Think about this, though: With less population, wouldn't this mean that rents would fall due to lessened demand for housing?
Or are landlords "entitled" to guaranteed rental rates?

NYC already saw mass abandonment in the 1970s when rent control made property ownership untenable. Entire neighborhoods like the South Bronx were burned, boarded up, or bulldozed, and city services collapsed. In short, if private property owners leave, housing deteriorates, the tax base shrinks, tenant conditions worsen, and economic inequality deepens, the exact opposite of Mamdani’s stated goals. Rent control may sound like protection, but in practice, it often hurts the very people it’s meant to help. There's a difference between fewer renters and fewer property owners who rent, maintain, and pay taxes on their property.
Landlords have a right under our system to establish rents that cover all of their costs and provide a profit margin that furthers their participation in the enterprise. Marxists are lousy business managers that hate the profit system and motive.

They are happy to sit and NOT invest or pay taxes. Get loans? Tax breaks ? Sure!!
