Social Security retirement trust fund may be depleted in less than a decade, new trustees' report finds

One of the biggest news items of the week failed to make the Politics Board. Hardly got much attention anywhere.

It’s a pretty big deal for people who live in the US. The next president is going to be forced to deal with this. What actions should be taken?

1. Raise the income level that is subject to SS taxes
2. Raise the retirement age for people in the workforce who are not super close to retirement already
3. Cut benefits for existing retirees
4. Reduce benefits for future retirees
5. Revise the COLA formula
6. Raise taxes on SS income
7. Repeal any tax cuts for SS income that might be in the yet to be passed reconciliation bill
8. Recruit high earner immigrants of working age to live and pay SS taxes in the US
9. Offer inheritance tax breaks to seniors who sign up for assisted suicide
10. Some combination of the above

Other?

Ok Mr./Mrs. President, you’re on the clock.

BabyBoomer50s being racist:

[Elizabeth Holms riots] Geez, the case hasn’t even gone to the jury and the rioters in CA are already looting the high end fashion stores. If the verdict goes the wrong way the streets of Walnut Creek, San Francisco, and LA could be filled with blondes in black turtlenecks. Not even going to guess how this would all go down if she were black.

Are you guys still rioting out there in LA?

I notice you didn't deny your racism.

I stand by my posts.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Your family disowned you when you went full MAGAt.

Deal with it, loser.

All Trump needs to do is dump the DOGE savings into SS. That kicks the can down the road for another decade before anyone has to do anything.

Personally, I feel that any long term solution is going to require some iteration of a flat tax without any personal deductions (including the homeowners mortgage interest deduction). Yes, it's the equivalent of raising taxes but this isn't going to be solved without that happening.

Funding SS from general taxes (individual and corporate income taxes, estate taxes, etc) instead of payroll taxes is a possibility.

Social Security is one of the bigger pyramid schemes within the global pyramid scheme of industrial civilization. It ran for almost a century, long enough for many people to believe it is necessary.

I have seen some of what happens when people are too old to work but get barely enough money to live, while organs slowly break down. That's not a future I want, and probably won't have.

Social security wasn't intended to be a full retirement paycheck. It was always intended to be supplemental income so that we don't have seniors sleeping/starving on the streets.

There are plenty of millionaires and billionaires in the United States.

For years public opinion surveys have indicated popular support for a more progressive tax system. We should not even be thinking about tax cuts for the rich.

Social Security is funded through payroll taxes, not income taxes. I’m not aware of anything in the pending reconciliation bill that cuts payroll taxes for anyone.

The reconciliation bill is intended to keep individual tax rates at their current levels, and provide some tax breaks on tips, social security income, and overtime pay as well as some other politically targeted sweeteners.

Payroll taxes will no longer be sufficient to support Social Security and Medicare. That is why we will need to pay for Social Security. and Medicare with steeply progressive income taxes and a large wealth tax. I am confident most of the voters will approve, once they understand what is at stake.

That’s the point. The shortfall is now expected to arrive by 2033. The question is how to close the gap.

Drawing from the the general fund is an option. Doing so would transform social security from its intended purpose as a retirement insurance program to more of a typical entitlement program. That might ruffle some feathers among traditional social security advocates but it’s definitely one option.

Well how about start by lifting the payroll tax cap so the rich pay their fair share? Oh and instead of demonizing immigrants, bring in more skilled able to work immigrants to grow the tax base. Maga is too racist for logical thinking. Not sure what you are arguing but the solution is to make it stronger not gut it.

Kind of interesting that this is STILL going on considering that the whole issue go's back to the 1970's.

In the 1990's Clinton set up a "Blue Ribbon Panel" to come up with solutions and their answer, "privatize." The democrats ignored the recommendations.

In the 2000's Bush II tried to get privatization, or at least partial privatization, through congress. The democrats went bat shit crazy against the notion. Why? They'd lose control of all of those political and social control levers that are listed by the OP.

So here we are 50 years later and nothing's changed.

The Democrats do nothing on the assumption that they will always be in control.
