I write on Google Docs. It auto saves all the time for me. And I can access from anywhere, and any device.
When I'm ready to submit for publication, I copy/paste it into word, fix any formatting issues, and then submit.

Ideas are dime a dozen. Words are what make them real.

Don’t write in the Lit submission form, @leicesterbiguy. Use a text editor, even Notepad, save it to a file and back it up using some cloud storage service.

Had been getting on fine with the lit story editor but somehow with my tablet I deleted a chunk. Lesson learnt this version will be better anyway now.

1. Save often.
2. The rewrite is often better than what you lost.

Thanks. Did not know that shortcut would work. I go to the file icon and then to save. I use my laptop for writing and copy and paste is different too. I copy with my mouse but to paste, I have to hit ctrl V

My biggest annoyance with Word is that it insists on autosaving to the cloud instead of locally, as it used to.

I know there are circumstances where this is useful, but I don't want stories written for this site to end up in my business account. Let me choose.

Yesterday I was up at the crack of dawn to do final Read Aloud proofreading on a massive text for a client. After an hour, out of the blue, Word decided to shut down. I'd saved, but because there were multiple rounds of Track Changes it took me nearly 20 minutes to figure out the last save point and redo everything I'd lost.

Just the kind of thing you want at 6.30am.

I'm borderline psychotic when it comes to making sure my stuff is backed up. I use onedrive and google drive and have a flash drive around here somewhere that I occasionally back things up to. When I write by hand I scan my notebook before I type things up -- makes things a lot easier to type, but also harder to lose. I make new versions of documents when I make substantial edits because I'm afraid to lose even the things I've decided to scrap.

None of that takes a ton of time. Fairly easy steps to put my mind at ease. But still. Sometimes it feels excessive, as if I'm under the impression that losing what I've written would not just be a bummer but would rob the world of something amazing*.

I think I'd have a hard time as a writer of an earlier generation where none of those safeguards existed. I feel for Hemingway who apparently lost a number of drafts and manuscripts when his wife at the time mislaid his suitcase. It seems like he was kind of a dick about it -- I probably would be too.

That is only for autosave. If you can remember to save on your own, then just save the file to your local HD and no cloud will be used.

I loathe using Windows. The only reason my Desktop has Windows, is because my wife needs it for work. If not, I'd have installed Linux on it the day we got it...

That being said... Word DOES tend to work better with other things than OpenOffice/LibreOffice. (Both wonderful alternatives, but sometimes, it just works better if you have word.)

I've found myself more and more just writing on Google Docs. It may be cloud based...but it autosaves, and I can continue from my laptop, or my Desktop (or someone else's computer) regardless of where I am, without worrying about bringing my files with me, or wondering if I have a working copy of the right kind of word/office type program.
I still copy/paste into Word and do my final editing there, before uploading a .doc as my final piece...

I have literally NEVER written anything in the Lit Story Editor. I didn't know anyone did that. That just seems like a bad idea....And based on this thread...I seems I was right..lol
