When you had the picture without makeup is what he is remembering. Sans meaning none he mistook for what I think are called wings in the eye makeup world, but I may not have that right because I'm oldish.

Serifs are the small "flags" at the single letters for the serif-fonts.
So "sans serif" is a font without these little flags.

I was always told by my daughter (Graphic Arts Major with a minor in publication) that Comic Sans was evil and it always made her laugh when she saw it on serious advertising.
