Was I extreme?

😡😡😡😡💩😡😡😡😡

You start this thread asking if you were in the wrong defending someone you perceived insulting those with mental disorders and you don’t know???!!

A quick search shows that the term ‘MAGAtard’ has never been used here. Magtard has been used. And it was used only by arguably the dumbest member here saint anne.
Rent free. :)

I don’t know if I am offended, I think it is not right and cruel. Are you offended by such things?
My point is that libtard/magtard is a more specific insult than the broad brush statement that people on a forum are mentally unstable.

Also, libtard is by far the most prevalent slang use of the r word insult.
If you want to have there be a change then you need not look far to correct offending members.

Ok, I get what you are saying. I think! Hahahha

Ok, I would ask a follow up question then. Should I try to ask folks to stop using libtard/magatard/magtard?
I did do this recently, a couple days ago, didn’t go well and two people said they will continue to use the word MAGAtard. But I would like your thoughts on it.

Re/tard is a great term, and it needs to be rehabilitated from associations with those having intellectual disabilities.

You recommend it is taken away from, a now demeaning way of saying someone with intellectual disabilities to being used a political or partially political term?

Similar to how gay used to mean happy and now describes someone who is attracted to the same sex?

I personally am on a journey of general positivity and respect for all. That doesn’t mean I’m going to stand by idly watching racists, fascists, and liars without pushing back. Deplorable works just fine for most.

Ok but why? Why not use something else? Just no one has thought of another term?

Look up how I’ve used the term libtard. Each and every time it was highly sarcastic. I used it because no other word could have better shown the hypocrisy and those who read understood.

Ok, next topic for anyone who would like to respond. Let’s talk about nicknames for the other side. “MAGAtard” and “libtard” what do we think? It is using the “-tard” part of the r word.

Is it necessary? Should we use it regardless?

To me, these words feel designed to be antagonistic. An attempt to anger someone. And it’s also like a stereotype with a call to arms included. It bundles people with many and varied views into a grouping that will imply all sorts of connotations that are more extreme than the reality.

These words do not aid the understanding of other peoples concerns. But I often feel that’s why they are used.

“That’s exactly what you’d expect from the tofu eating wokarati.” Adds nothing. It’s deliberately divisive and emotive.

It avoids the need to have a reasoned stance or even a clue of what someone disagrees with.

Welcome to the Politics Board, newb.

Yes, I love the general positivity and respect for all. Thank you so much.

I completely agree. Thank you!

The Politics Board exists to antagonize one's political opponents for sport, throw base insults, cast aspersions, and question familial heritage.

Good. I only ask that you stand on more solid ground with your beliefs. Be offended by all those you feel have demeaned the community of those suffering from mental issues. And that means correcting even me if I continue to use a slur that offends you.

Well thank you!

This thread, maybe it didn’t help anyone, but it did help me! I think when people reach out, ask questions about themselves, ask questions about others, it can help. Possibly an earlier on commenter did not understand my intention.

Well, social media does make people mentally unstable. It's not the fault of the users. It's the fault of the people that run them.

Social media has been shown in multiple studies to cause anxiety and depression. It also inhibits brain function by having constant stimulation through infinite scrolling. The brain needs both periods of quiet solitude and face to face social interaction to function properly and social media makes it hard to do both.
I quit social media back after a rather disgusting incident happened to me, and frankly, I do not regret it all!

definitely not. I dont believe I have ever said magatard or libtard etc

I wanted to make a thread to allow for people to post something they believe, think, did, etc and people can respond on what they think.

Please be respectful.

I will start first. Someone was messaging me and he said something along the lines of, “I got off of the apps because there were too many mentally unstable people 😂.” I found this offensive, I have good friends who have mental health issues and I told him I didn’t want to talk to him because of his comment. Soooo, was I extreme?
No, mental health is a social concern
