It's no coincidence that Trump first rose to national prominence in the '80s. He embodies the shameless, heartless, dishonest, cruel, cynical, narcissistic greed-is-good ethic that gained cultural ascendance in that period -- in conscious reaction to the naive high idealism of the 1960s counterculture.

And he's not the only one. The '80s ethic never really faded away like the '60s ethic did.

Democrats hate rich Republicans but tend to accept rich Democrats. Why is that? Do they aquire their money in different ways? Like thru being community organizers? :)

Loved that movie. Fun fact: Michael Douglas got throat cancer from going down on CZJ. Allegedly. :)

The idealism of the 60s curdled into the cruelty of the 80s. The hippies grew up to be yuppies. It was always the same Boomer selfishness.

The idealism of the '60s emerged in the best economic times America ever enjoyed, before or since.

This is simply what the American national character produces, when it is relieved of a sense of economic urgency.

Yes, blame Trump as the living embodiment of every moral failing since disco died. It’s amazing how neatly some minds, especially yours, can cram entire decades of economic, cultural, and geopolitical complexity into a single cartoon villain. But yes, tell yourself it all started with Trump and the '80s, and not with decades of bipartisan rot, cultural cowardice, and the death of personal responsibility. Whatever helps you sleep through the sound of your own sanctimony. Recall as well that in the 80s, Donald Trump was a valued member of the Democrat Party before he redeemed himself in the hearts and minds of the American people.

The only award he won on merit was admission to the WWE Hall of Fame.

He was never a 'valued' member of the Democratic Party which is why he left for Reform, then hijacked the GOP. He added up the White Supremacists, the bigoted religious and those who have no agenda but hatred for Uncle Sam and tried his luck with Republicans (even though he said he would take firearms away from anyone he thought was insane). And here we are.

It certainly didn't start with anything like that. Where are you getting this nonsense?!

Trump simply placed himself at the head of the Tea Party movement. That's why you never hear anything about the Tea Party any more -- it has simply become the Trump movement.

Because rich Democrats usually aren't trying to destroy the government and make the USA look like pre-revolutionary France, just for starters.

There are some on both sides that inherited their wealth, but I think you'll find more on the left who earned their fortunes. Warren Buffett comes immediately to mind, but there are others.

There’s no such thing as “the Democrat Party”.
