I've always heard that there's no such thing as a stupid question, so here goes:

I know how they work from a physiological standpoint; that a ring restricts the flow of blood from exiting an erect cock thereby keeping it hard. Here's what I don't understand: Do those things get put on before the erection or after it becomes hard?
I ask because I've seen pictures of a cock with a ring on it and the ring looks too tight to have been slid down over the hard cock. OTOH, if it gets put on before the cock gets hard, why doesn't the ring prevent the blood from entering the cock just like it prevents it from exiting it?

Inquiring minds want to know.

There are different types.

Most are real “rings” - a circle of some solid material. You can’t get it on after getting hard unless it’s sized too large to provide any of the constriction which is its job.

There are also ones which are either adjustable in some way, or else which open and close. These kinds can be put on and start constricting after getting hard.

There are stretchy ones too. These could conceivably go on before or after.

I bought a set of rubber(?) rings some time ago and being very much a "grower" (3 1/2" -> 7") I was concerned that they would restrict blood flow into my cock if I put it on when I was flaccid.
I also looked at those that seem to have a gap in the material that would go on when I'm erect but connect with rubber bands to make the necessary constriction, but Yikes @ $$!
I'll try the ones I already have and see if the constriction impedes the erection. If it does I'll be looking at the stretchy ones soon.

I suggest, for starters, check out the sets of silicone cock rings on Amazon... they're affordable, versatile, and more "forgiving" than steel rings.
