I hope this isn’t too much information, but my closest friend for most of my life loved that scene and would always laugh when Dan says “what light?” That just tickled him to the core, every time we watched it. In the music world, it appears to me to be two schools of thought. One is to learn all the different scales, the different modes, when to use this, when to use that. They practice scales daily and know them intimately.
The second school of thought is, not thought at all. It is feel. You play what sounds right, what feels right. Maybe you don’t know what scale that is, certainly not what mode it is, you play it because it sounds right to you. I am totally, of the second school of thought. Which is to say, no schooling, just pick up the guitar and play.
