We really should not have any more presidents who have never been lawyers

Lincoln never could have accomplished what he did if he were not a lawyer.

Trump does not appear to understand the Constitution at all. I don't believe he even knows what "due process" means.

Also, all lawyers are in the deeply ingrained habit of deferring to judges -- and we should never, ever have a president who does not have that habit.
NOt ArPhy. He only speaks for himself. And there are lots of Arphys around.

Trump just stated when asked if he had to uphold the Constitution, "I don't know, I'm not a lawyer..."

$0.02. You are better off with someone who is not a lawyer, based upon the outcomes of all those who were... Just my $0.02.

And an engineer. Almost as good as a lawyer.

Carter took an engineer's approach to the federal budget -- he just looked at what spending was necessary and what sources of revenue were available -- without reference to interest groups and gored oxen. It's interestingly described in The Invisible Bridge: the Fall of Nixon and the Rise of Reagan, by Rick Perlstein.
He was also a naval nuclear scientist aboard a submarine and a Sunday school teacher for decades, WAY better than a lawyer.;):coffee:

Obama is a lawyer, and he was the best president since FDR!
I have it on good authority that the felon is, was, and will forever be the best of everything, including president or dictator... You know, somehow, he is that he says... or Pope. [not that I'm an ardent admirer of the guy who should be in an orange jumpsuit.

By the way, you sound biased about lawyers. We already know they can't tell good from bad or defend anyone unless there is money in their hands. Richard Nixon comes to mind. DJT too, but a bad nightmare that one is. And look, he even had lawyers paying him to be on his team.

Obama introduced the Affordable Care Act, which His Assholiness has been unable to improve on despite endless bleating.

You need a carpenter for President. They are always thinking ahead.

Nah. There was this one famous carpenter who was such a lying asshole he discredited the trade for all time.

And still the only President to do anything positive after leaving office.

The issue isn’t that he doesn’t understand it; like most convicted felons, he understands it perfectly well when relevant to his own interests. He also consciously disregards it to advance his policies
If you genuinely believe a higher level of legal expertise than that is needed, you’ll presumably insist not simply on legal training, but someone who’s served as a constitutional judge, given the need to grasp the nuance and complexities involved
Someone like… Alito? Somehow difficult to imagine people’s rights would be any safer with him as President. Isn’t it…
Rather than trying to make politics even more elitist and esoteric, perhaps it would be better to look at ways to include more people
