How can I figure out what lists my stories are on?

Hey y'all! When I look at my list of stories on my author profile, I can see that my stories are on a lot of lists. For example, my first story says it's on 65 different lists. But when I look in my control panel, I can see that story has been Favorited 33 times.

Does that mean my story is on 32 manually curated user lists? Or am I misunderstanding how this works?

And if I really am showing up on a bunch of lists, I would love to know what those lists are! It would be so cool to see what other stories I'm being curated along side of, I feel like that would be an incredibly valuable form of feedback! But I don't see any way to find that out...

Being added to a public list does seem to generate an identical alert on our dashboard as being favorited. If you monitor things closely enough you might be to review which one a given reader did, and I think you get a double alert if the person added you to their favorites as well as a list. But checking out their favorites/lists doesn't always show their recent activity. I'm guessing this is because pages update very haphazardly, but it might also be the case that we get an alert when someone adds our story to their private reading list.
As far as I know, there is currently no option to filter the activity log(s) to see, for example, who has been favoriting a given story. Nor can we download the data for sorting by other means.

Hmm... I've only been publishing for about a month, so it didn't take me too long to scroll back through my dashboard alerts 😆

I see plenty of alerts that say "So-and-so has added your story to Favorites," but not a single alert that says "So-and-so has added your story to {Custom List Name}."

I do know for sure that I'm on at least one custom list, because the user told me they did (which was so cool), and I can see that I'm on it. But I never got an alert when they did it 🤔

The icon you are referring to, the one with the number 65, means that your story has either been made a "favorite" OR been placed on a "to be read later" list. It is the sum of those two lists. This number is always larger than the favorites number, which is indicated by the heart symbol.

As far as I know there is no way to know if your story has been placed on a curated list other than the maker of the list telling you so.

Yeah, unfortunately, the alert we get is the same, regardless of what the reader does. All you can do is follow the link to the reader's profile and try to figure out what they did. Not everyone has lists, of course, so that narrows it down a bit.

Ohhh okay! And "to be read later" is private, so that makes sense.

What a bummer that we don't get a notification when we get added to a curated list...

But at least now I know how to interpret that number, thank you!

I know for sure that I have stories on curated lists, but there's been no indication when it happened.

You can be a source of arcane knowledge, and not even know it!

The stats download lists the number of lists each story is on.

If the list is public, you can look for it on the user's profile, but it quickly becomes tedious if they have multiple lists.

If you view "Lists" on your dashboard, you will see three:

1. Favorites
2. Read Later
3. Favorite Story Games

These correlate to the columns "Favorites" and "Reading Lists" if you download your statistics. Only the "Favorites" are public as denoted by the unlocked icon.

These aren't the curated lists, though. They're variations on Favourites, which is something different. You get flagged when someone Faves your story or your account name, but not when a story is put onto a curated list. You have to pick up clues from somewhere else, when that happens.

You are alerted. It just doesn't distinguish between favorites and curated lists. They all say "added to favorite stories".

If you've ever seen the same story get favorited several times back to back by the same person, that's what's actually happening. You might not even be on their normal favorite story list. It may all be curated lists.

As to finding out what lists you're on? No simple, reliable solution to that. You have to see the favorite come in, click on the name, hope their page has updated, that the list isn't private, and then scroll/find in each list. There's no "click here to see what lists you're on".

That's not what I'd call an alert for a curated list, though. If you can't tell if it's a favourite or something more, then to all intents and purposes, it's a fave, nothing more.

There was some discussion of this a while back. Right now it appears (correct me if I'm wrong) there is no good way to find public curated lists made by the user-base writ large (you have to navigate to a particular user and see if they have any lists). Nor any way to see which public curated lists a story is in, which would be a complementary feature.

If the site had this capacity, it would seem a real benefit to users. So, maybe someday it will. Look for it in 2035 perhaps.

Old thread and reply, I know. I have a question though. I have several stories where the number of favourites is higher than the number on lists. How does this work if lists is the sum of favourites and to be read later. This one has always confused me a little.

They've changed this. I just downloaded mine, and all of them have lower numbers for lists than favorites. I happened to have older ones from 2023 still in my downloads folder, and comparing them, it appears they've now completely separated favorites from lists in those numbers.

This is likely due to the full implementation of the lists feature, and the implementation of the new favorites toplist.

So now, your favorites number should line up with what you see on your dashboard, while the lists number is only other lists. I'd really like the lists number in the dashboard, so we don't have to download our stats to see it.

Not to be contrary, but I have quite a few where the numbers are reversed. My story "A Common Man" has 47 favorites and is on 25 lists. That is one of 34 where the number of favorites is more than the number on a list. The other 21 stories are the other way around. I wonder if that comes from a reader putting it on their reading list, then removing it after they read it?

Thanks. That's happened a few times to me and I always wondered what the heck back to back favoring was about.

Not a chance. 2135...maybe. :D

This is a very recent change. As recently as 10/10/24, I can confirm that SimonDoom's statement was accurate. That's the most recent one I have before checking today to see that it's been changed.

But since I'm an old fart, they may just put my head in a jar and they ain't gunna' get much go juice out of this cranium.
What? Me? You gotta look down on the bottom shelf, 'cause even in the future they're gunna need someone who knows how to fix the toilet.

I'll make sure to come by every week or so to sprinkle some fish food in your jar! 🐟🐠

You're not being contrary at all. I think RejectReality is correct: the final column in the daily stat download represents something different from before. Now it appears to be a separate reading list, while the penultimate column represents favorites. I compared the penultimate column with my dashboard, and they pretty nearly match up. However, I also noticed the while for most of my stories favorites exceed lists, with my more recent stories this is not true. In some cases my stories show more lists than favorites. But this is more true of my most recent stories, which makes sense because the reading list feature was installed a few years (I forget exactly when) I started writing stories.

I wonder if maybe that's a normal part of the lifecycle of a story, assuming that the favorites number and the lists number are now truly separated?

I imagine that a lot of people will put a story into a private to-read list, and then they may come back and give it a favorite after reading, and also remove it from their to-read list?
