Welcome!
Grab a seat while I explain what’s happening in here.

I love to glance at Lit in the morning and see threads with interesting conversation, or thought provoking comments, and then I will think about them throughout the day. But when I come back to them after work, the threads have moved on and I’ve missed my chance to connect my thoughts. It feels strange to quote things from 10 pages back and to then add my two cents. I don’t want to derail a discussion that’s moved on, or kill a lively back and forth with something that happened pages ago.

Also many times, I’ll took here in the mornings, and whether it’s because of different time zones, or people have a more active nightlife than I do, so much happens while I’m asleep, I’m bummed that I missed out.

But I digress..
So I’m just going to be prattling away in here about, well… ✨Highlights and Bombshells💥, or in other words, whatever topics arise.

This may not (absolutely will not) be the fastest moving thread. And if it’s been sitting for a couple days or more, please feel free to add your comments, questions, or topics, etc that you’d like to contribute.

Otherwise, it will just be a place for me to collect my own thoughts. Sometimes it’s nice to have a little spot on Lit where you feel you can stretch out and get comfy. So, if this thread looks like that type of place to you, come in and make yourself at home.

Oh, and please play nicely in here. We wouldn’t want to make use of the time out chair right away…⏳🪑

Hah! But look at the time now! 1:04 a.m.
I am feeling PRETty with it right about now …💤💤

Are you night owls? By choice? By circumstance? I am not. Never have been. I have always gotten up extremely early in the morning.

What is the opposite of a night owl? 🤔 A day…otter? Dolphin?

This definitely resonates with me. At times you simply come back after 30 odd minutes and thread seems to have added pages.

Somewhere in this forum, there is a thread that asks to describe oneself in 3 words. Or maybe it’s how you’re feeling, which would be easier. Sometimes I struggle even with that. (Does anyone else not know how they are feeling? Because I really have to think about it, at times). And then to have to voice how I’m feeling? Quickly? I freeze.

But anyway. That was a tangent. And here comes another.

I had a conversation with a close friend looong ago, when I was in high school or thereabouts. One of those eye opening conversations that make you realize that you’re different from even your closest friends. We were discussing which qualities about ourselves we thought of first as our defining factors. I can’t remember everything that I said, but I remember the first thing was that I was feminine. My friend’s first defining attribute was that she was African American. We’d grown up together. Gone to elementary school together. Vacationed together. Cried together. Shared so many experiences and thought the same things were funny and scary and awful. But there were still differences and this was a peek into how she saw herself, and how she saw the world. And actually, how I saw it too.

Coming back from that sidetrack, I’m thinking now about what traits I’d choose to define myself now.

When asked to choose three words so that you can show who you are to an online community, it’s pigeonholing. (Where does that term come from?) and even moreso here, because for obvious reasons, one doesn’t want to spill all of the details of themselves publicly. So it is so hard to get to know people for who they genuinely are here. And it’s difficult to share who you are, especially once an opinion has been made about you- or if you think one has been made about you. (Pssst…it probably hasn’t. No one knows what’s going on with whom, except for maybe two people. That’s my guess, anyway). And if people do think something untrue, that says more about them anyway (there’s my free “mom advice” for the day).

So I’m going to be thinking of my words.

My first one is still “feminine”.

I am a night owl.

Many years ago I worked an overnight job. It was a job that lasted for about 7 years. I never really shook off that experience. To this day, I still want to be up late. Often until 2am, sometimes later. Then back up at 730am to do it all over again. Occasionally, I'll have a wild hair and go to bed early at 1am.

I think early bird is the technically correct answer but I go with morning monkey. I love the morning. So full of peace and potential. Even when I was in grade school I usually went to bed around 11. As I’ve aged it’s only gotten worse. Add in that my wife was a teacher for most of our life together. In bed at 9:30pm and up at 5 am was the regular cycle.

I have fond memories of that quiet time after 1 am driving around the city. But I don’t miss it. I like feeling rested when I wake up.

Due to time zones, I often feel like I miss out on some interesting topics of conversation and, like you, I don’t feel comfortable integrating myself into it after it has moved on. It is one of the reasons why I don’t sometimes participate in the serious conversations as I know I will have to leave it at some point.

I am night owl. Being the youngest of 11 children, I would often stay awake late at night waiting for my brothers and sisters to come home so I could listen in to their conversations about what they had been up to (and then I would grass them up to my dad 😁). Also, in my early childhood, Margaret Thatcher came along and said she only needed 4 hours sleep a night. Well if it was good enough for the Prime Minister then it was good enough for me.

I think the opposite of a night owl is an early bird but I think you can be both. I tend to stay up pretty late sometimes until 2am but still get up by 6am to go to work. It does catch up with me at points though and I will then have a good 10 hour sleep

As others have said, I think it’s early bird, but I like day dolphin better! I’m something of a day dolphin because I have sleep issues and if I don’t go to bed early-ish and wake up early-ish, I get totally thrown off and go weeks without sleeping well.

Oh, I SO feel this! It’s something that has been missing in most of my relationships & something I won’t compromise on any more.

My sister worked the night shift - and no, that isn’t a euphemism for anything. :) She was a dispatcher. I don’t know how she did it. Between having to stay up late and keep her cool under stressful situations…oof. And knowing her as I did- she’d freak out if I took her clothes without asking. But anyway, it took a long time for her to shake off the nighttime routine, too. I guess you’re just nocturnal now.

Oh. Yes, early bird is totally the term. 🤦🏼‍♀️ See what happens when I stay up late? And that teacher timetable is what I keep because I’m a teacher. So it all makes sense. But I was like this before I became a teacher. It sure helps though. Many of my coworkers drag themselves into work every day. I have no issue being up early.

I like the term morning monkey :). The quiet freshness of the mornings is the best time of the day, in my opinion.

Well I hope that you just quote what you wanted to talk about and add to the conversation. I’d love to hear what you have to say.

My daughter didn’t sleep much as an infant and it was very difficult as a first time parent. I remember bleary-eyed me talking to the doctor about it and he said nonchalantly how people really only needed 4 hours of sleep to function, as if that was supposed to make me smile and skip out of his office. I think I may have growled at him…

I like thinking about it this way, that one can be both. I think I shall! I am both. Now, I just need to have my late night phase. Any time now…;-)

I think we can make day dolphin work. Let’s go with it.

Me too. And no, we won’t compromise anymore. You’re right, Cheeky. 💜

I've always been a night owl. Partly due to trauma and a broken flight or fight mechanism, but also I think I'm just hard wired that way. So groggy in the mornings, takes an hour to fully wake up. But at night? I'm energetic and raring to go.

And I'm doing as good as I can @Love_Is_Blonde , thank you. Hope you're well 😁

I am the same way anymore. I am awake by 6 every morning not matter what time I get to bed. I guess it is part of getting older for me. I do have a hard time sleeping more than 8 hours. So I am usually in bed pretty early. Reading until my mind shuts off and I can sleep.

I’m sorry that you’ve got some trauma causing some difficulty getting up in the mornings. That doesn’t sound like a good way to start each day. 😕

It’s doesn’t matter what time I go to bed, I always wake up to pee! 🤦🏻‍♂️
Ah the joy of getting older. :)
I taught for one year, I don’t get the dragging yourself in. You can half ass and fake your way through most jobs. But those kids could smell the weakness, I swear.
They sure can. That’s the truth. You don’t have to say a word. They just know.

I'm a night owl. I don't think that will surprise anyone.

For the last 5 years or so, my sleep cycle has been mangled, and I would stay awake till 3/4 am, waking at around 6.30/7 am. That would be my range for around 10 days, then I'd crash and sleep for hours.

Then start again.

However in the last couple of months, for whatever reason, it's all got a bit more settled, and I'm getting between 4 and 6 hours most nights.
