Donald Trump has destroyed the Republican Party

What comes next?

I had always assumed that as the Republicans dwindled with the aging of their core demographics, the new division would be between a centrist Democratic Party and an activist Progressive Party. But the progressives damaged their brand so badly by staying home in November 2024, I'm not sure they can get back in the running.

What new coalition will be scavenged from the wreckage of the Republicans to balance out the Democrats?

Voters disapprove of Democrats in Congress because they're not doing enough to fight Donald Trump. But when it comes to elections, the Republican brand is toxic, and it's only going to get worse.

So, to keep the thread on track, who will pick up the pieces of the shattered Republican coalition?

The rich donors will obviously switch to support to mainstream Democrats, but will a new populist party coalesce around Bernie and a rump of poor white racists?

It seems like only yesterday it was the Democrats who were back on their heels…

🤔

James Carville has / had it right.

The Republican Party is collapsing under the weight of its own fucked up "leadership" and policies, and the Democrats need to stay out of their way until the electorate howls for change.

👍

To the thread topic’s main point:

Depending on how bad things get, (if even the common MAGAts realize they’ve been LIED TO / GASLIGHTED) it could be the end of the Republican Party altogether.

A pragmatic progressive centrist party could emerge from the rubble, consisting of a coalition of the old establishment Democrats and Republicans, but a more likely scenario is that a massive populist workers party emerges (an unholy alliance of right and left wing populist workers.)

Of course, that ^ would only happen if things get FUBAR. (but we are well on our way to FUBAR, so…)

😑

🤬

If things only get G. W. Bush bad, then the Democrats could see significant gains, while the Republican Party once again retreats to the wilderness of their “Red State fiefdoms" (IF their constituents will have them) - for a time - until the electorate invariably forgets how bad the Republican Party was / is, and gives them another chance…

The key question is, when (and I suppose if) will rural whites get over their bigotry and see the common cause they have with POC, which everyone except them is already aware of? When that happens, the right is fucked.

The scary thing is the radical religious intolerant rural whites have a fuckton in common with the radical religious intolerant urban Arabs / Muslims.

MAGAT = HAMAS on maaaaany levels / issues.

And that ^ unholy alliance ALREADY cooperated to elect DonOld in the 2024 election, so…

Yep. You've probably seen that video a certain member of this community has repeatedly shared that depicts a hypersensitive white liberal and a racist who agree on many things. It's the same principle at work here: extremists might come from wildly different points of view, but they tend to come to the same conclusion.

I think you might be right. With the Republicans out of the the picture, we could see a re-forging of the old Democrat alliance: racist Dixiecrats who hate blacks and immigrants + socialist bomb-throwers who hate Jews.

The rest of the Democratic Party will coalesce around rights for women and minorities funded by businessmen who just want stability and sane governance.

Slightly more of a possibility than a probability, but that unholy alliance is still waaaaay too close to becoming a reality for my liking: Especially after what happened in the 2024 election. Let’s hope that was just a one-off.

Nah, he hasn't destroyed the Republican Party. He's remade it into a populist working and middle class "America First" party which is semi-isolationist, and has no real interest in being the world's policeman and fighting wars on behalf of the military-industrial complex and large business interests, or in financing the rest of the world.

I think the MAGA/Republican Party will continue to move to the right and cement its status as a true fascist party. There are obviously plenty of racist, misogynist homophobes who will support that. They aren’t going anywhere, regardless of how much damage Dementia Donnie does to the US.

The US is the largest single economy, at about 30 trillion (nominal). The EU is about 20 trillion (nominal). Right now the US dollar is losing value to the Euro. With the trade war, the US economy will shrink. If the Euro starts to rise and even surpasses the USD and the US bond rating drops, you'll no longer need to worry about financing the rest of the world. You might have problems financing yourselves.

My take is, a lot of Americans are quite insular with no real interest in the rest of the world - those are the Americans the rest of the world never see or hear of, but now, with Trump, they have a voice and they're in the ascendant. Heartland vs coastals......they don't care if the US economy shrinks.... speaking for myself, I could care less about Walmart and IBM and HP and all the large corps. Screw them. I could care less for the coastal elites and the Wall Street Bankers and the like as well.

Like it or not, what Trump is doing reflects his supporters views...and whether I like it personally or now, he's taking the US down a rather ruthless "America First" path.

Your thoughts, likes or desires are moot on Wall Street. They own you, and they own the debt. If the dollar keeps tanking, and your economy enters a recession, remember, unlike last time, the rest of the world is not going to work together to pull you out.

I don't disagree, I just understand the outcomes of the path. I doubt maga's do, and when they are hurt, don't come to us for help.

True, that. We are guinea pigs, whether we like it or not....in my case, I just found out I MAY be eligible to apply for Polish citizenship by descent. I better work on my Polish. LOL. All I can do in Polish is swear. Mind you that's probably enough LOL

Oh yeah, most have no idea. One often forgets, being on a site like this and discussing things with literate and intelligent people, that however much we disagree, we are a very small minority of the overall population that read, discuss, argue and think about these things. And that's not even taking into account the numberof Americans who are functionally illiterate - and that's a fairly large percentage all by itself.

It's actually scary when you realize how fucking ignorant of what's going on most people are. We here may call each other stupid and idiots and all the rest of it but that's so far from the truth that it's scary. I mean, buffalogurl is so far out there that I laugh, but way out there as she is, she's way more in touch with reality than half the American population. Terrified? You should be. LOL.

Anecdotal I know, but in Uni I had a housemate who had no idea who the President was, and didn't care. She never listened to or read any news, not even talk shows, the only thing she ever read was Cosmopolitan, mostly for all the fashion stuff - and she graduated with a Business Studies major and became an Accountant. She wasn't stupid, but she had no interest in anything except her own little life. She married a guy with the same lack of interest in anything beyond whatever he was doing. They thought I was bizarre because I had so many books and was into politics and had travelled outside the US.

I guess where I'm going is, there are way more people like that than we ever imagine. And that's not even taking into account all the recent third world imports with views that are antithetical to Americas founding ethos - and probably wouldn't even know what antithetical meant either.
