locally produced food is usually the healthier choice anyway, but the question of price remains. USA wages, supply costs (water, fodder, fertilizer, etc), internal taxes, packaging and transports influence the final price. Then comes demand. If the local producers can't keep up with the sudden demand increase, the prices will increase... it's what happened with the eggs.

How can the UK build Mercs in the US? Mercedes is a German company and they already manufacture in the US as does BMW.
Yes the UK does buy Fords but not the ones that the US makes. Europeans don't like the cars that the US builds. Europeans drive cars that fit the roads, which means they are smaller than the ones the US builds. They drive cars that corner at speed without rolling. Fuel is much more expensive in Europe so they want cars that do a lot more miles to the gallon.
If you want to supply a market, you have to tailor your product to fit that market. When it comes to cars the problem is that the US doesnt make cars that Europeans want but Europe makes cars that Americans do want. You want to sell cars into Europe, make the cars that Europeans want to drive.
