“The Slut Detector (tm)”

Story about a guy or gal who go to Spencer’s gift knockoff and find a novelty item called “the slut detector (tm)”

Maybe the person who runs the shop even pushes it on them and offers them a sexual favor to prove it works.

Lead takes it and the instructions are pretty simple: turn it on, point it at someone (man woman or enby) and it will provide a rating for them.

They use it as a lark. First on friends and neighbors and then on strangers. For fun, they make a pass at someone who rates high on it and sure enough, they score.

An additional feature could be a button that the manual which is written more like a hunting guide, says should be pressed when “a slut is camouflaging themself to force them out of hiding” with simpler instructions being “if someone is a rating 7 or above but isn’t acting like it, press the button”

For example: they run into a stern teacher. The button is pressed and suddenly the teacher is acting like they are at the club they frequent

This sounds like one of those ads we used to see in comic books for xray glasses. Guy sees it and orders it, planning on using it as a gag gift for a close friend who has trouble scoring. But fuck, if it doesn't actually work!

Yeah, I was thinking more Spencer’s since they have naughty gifts and such (as an aside I remember the dildos they sold were nightmares apparently they now sell higher quality ones but I remember they had ones made of hard hollow plastic back in the day)

But I could see it being a mail order (I liked the dead mall aesthetic for where they got it but having it be ordered through mail is equally mysterious).

I also like the idea of it being a gift. Like use it as a little joke before they take a night out on the town. They try it out on the gas station register worker who normally just looks with disdain on everyone but they see she has a high rating so friend makes a pass and when he goes to the bathroom, she barges in, yanks his pants down and tells him he’s in luck as her boyfriend just cancelled on her. One BJ later and friend comes out utterly stunned.

Course you could also have a few surprises. They hit a strip club and their dancer is flirting with them and jokes they should use it on her as she’s off the charts…and she doesn’t even register. She plays it off but maybe after a few more misadventures they run into her at a diner where she’s getting breakfast/dinner and she admits that she’s ace. She knows what she’s got and knows how to flaunt it but even if she liked sex the job’s rough.

The older waitress though who has a big hearty laugh, smokes a pack day and likes telling customers about her kids and grandkids? …well getting a health violation has never been so fun

Of course maybe they can’t resist and try it out on each other’s moms…and then each of them suddenly pretend they have no idea what the rating was on the other’s Mom
