I knew a guy who was there. He was under age, but signed up anyway. He was on the ships, at least during most of it. Even there they were dodging bullets. He said there was a downed ship, and every once in a while a head would pop up from the stack. Turned out to be Japanese radioing artillery corrections back to shore. At one point he looked back and those stacks were full of holes like Swiss cheese.

Just saw the ewo memorial last fall. I remember him telling me he saw that flag in real life. I don't know from where or when, but he did see it.

Somewhere we have a picture of his ship leaving San Francisco on the way across the Pacific.

Three of my top life mentors were WWII Veterans.
One spent 2 years in a Japanese POW camp, living on cabbage and worms (because the worms got it before him) his stomach never recovered.
He'd buy a plate lunch at the deli, eat from it 3-4 times throughout the day and evening, then throw the remainder out.

One reenlisted as a Marine for Korea, as he thought they'd have him "better prepared" than the army had done.

This one was fresh out of the cocoon, you can see it's still pumping up it's wings. Probably 6" to 7" wingspan. Giant cecropia moth.

Watched it for 15-20 minutes, then let it do it's thing. Probably a once in a lifetime thing to see one emerge.

Yes! DIL and granddaughter surprised her this afternoon. She’s in such good spirits tonight! I had an oyster roast to attend then a round of darts. Nice little break for me. Her first PT appt is in the morning, so I think she gets the bandage taken off and maybe the sutures? The professional nurses will probably have a better read on that.

Bandage and suture removal are dependent on how well she's healing. She seems to be having a fairly uneventful post-op period. This is a good thing!

Luckily, the next two days are a little bit later and I blocked time so no one can take up my calendar. I have a lot of shit to do before I leave on Sunday.

Missus and I went for a walk after dinner. Love these longer and warmer days!
