Over 4+ decades many things have been put in place in the US which have led to this juncture or fork in the road as Elon calls it.

I'm sure there are many more known to informed US citizens but from a distance, the electoral college system of voting, bringing evangelicals into politics, deregulating financial regs, granting citizen rights to orgs, jettisoning media fair play allowing one-sided media, gerrymandering, politically stuffing supreme court, not controlling the financial lobbying of politics..... I'm sure there are lots more
