As far as I know, which is not very far, not all currants are the same. Some currants (black, red and white) are part of the same family as the gooseberry. Currants as are popular in the UK, especially in fruit scones, are a dried grape, similar to raisins and sultanas.Our UK folks should know!
In the UK, currants would refer to the dried grapes whereas blackcurrants (all one word) would refer to the gooseberry type. I think!!!
