I split kindling

Into smaller logs

A prisoners task?

Then those small logs were split
Into the thinnest strips
And sticks
I could manage with my axe
And hatchet

A hypnotic endeavor

I achieved some higher state

I could see my breath
And didn’t feel cold

Rather, I felt warm
Full

I wasn’t blowing out the fires
I was ready to start them

It was the most February day imaginable
And I celebrated it
Cuz, fuck
Tomorrow might not ever come
