All federal workers to receive buyout offers from Trump - sources

  1. Pay the experienced federal workers to leave
  2. Pay contractors to do the things that federal workers did
  3. Collect kickbacks from the contractors hired
Concepts of a plan!

It’s not a buyout. You don’t get to hang up your cleats and collect 8 months pay if you submit your resignation. You just get to keep your job and work from home until 9/30. You are still expected to work unless your management puts you on administrative leave.

I posted my comment the day the original letter was sent. The letter contained no assurances that employees would not have to keep working until 9/30. OPM subsequently clarified the offer with more details and an FAQ. It is a buyout, and tens of thousands have accepted it despite the best efforts of the public sector unions and Democrat politicians to squash it. 😀

The only people who have taken it are retirees who were already leaving the workforce.

Probably most, but absolutely not all.

Here’s what we know. Federal employees (non-military and postal) were told they’re going to be coming back to the office full time, five days a week. They were also told they could be reassigned to new positions or let go as cost reductions occur. And they were given the early retirement option.

There are a number of reasons for employees to consider the offer. Being close to retirement is one. Another is having an unacceptable commute. For parents, it could be losing the flexibility to drop off and pick up kids from school or preschool. Work from home appeals to a lot of people for lots of reasons. Fear of jobs being eliminated or reassigned might be reason enough to take the deal. As of February 11th, it was reported that 70,000 had accepted the offer. I know one of them. With the deadline extension over the weekend, there were probably some additional takers.

So it’s happening. I offer my congratulations to any and all who have taken this generous offer, especially those who will be enjoying retirement sooner rather than later. But also those who will be moving on to other occupations in another employment situation or as a stay at home parent.
