When police put much higher levels of resources into investigating crimes where the victims are white, where victims are more likely to report crime when they are white, when the ethnicity of perpetrators is not even recorded unless they are black, it's hard to put any reliance on the resulting statistics.

It's much like the statistics on gun crime, to be read through squinted eyes.

And Twitter is not a source, it's Right Wing gossip.

But Republicans say it’s increasing.

Crime has decreased since the middle of Bill Clinton’s first term precipitously," Lavine told ABC News. "

It isn’t a simple story of linear decline from whenever it started to right now.

It was until the pandemic and then it spiked, and now it’s on the way back down to that baseline where you would predict if there were no pandemic.

But it is one of the very long-term misperceptions that Americans have."

It was. The preliminary 2024 numbers are NOT good. Violent crime has decreased but property crimes are on the upswing.
