He can't say THIS ain't a quid pro quo!

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Monday indicated that he wants to reach an agreement with Ukraine to gain access to the country’s rare earth materials as a condition for continuing U.S. support for its war against Russia.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump complained that the U.S. had sent more in military and economic assistance to Ukraine than its European partners, adding, “We’re looking to do a deal with Ukraine where they’re going to secure what we’re giving them with their rare earth and other things.”

Trump suggested that he’s received word from the Ukrainian government that they’d be willing to make a deal to give the U.S. access to the elements critical to the modern high-tech economy.

“I want to have security of rare earth,” Trump added. “We’re putting in hundreds of billions of dollars. They have great rare earth. And I want security of the rare earth, and they’re willing to do it.”

Ukraine doesn't have to accept, though I'm sure they could offer up some sort of deal about them. Russia might request the same as part of a deal.
Trump is looking for a deal and Zelinski has signaled interest in US investment in its rare earth deposits. One tricky aspect of this among many complicated dimensions is that large amounts are in areas Russia currently controls.

I don't see why Russia would give those up unless Ukraine agrees to something for Russia.

It all comes down to whether any guarantee of sovereignty/safety is agreed to in the long run.

We have rare minerals in the US still waiting to be mined.

It'll be a lot easier to buy those deposits from Putin than Zelensky, even if Trump's debts to Russian banks have been paid off by Musk.

Excellent idea.

The US supports nations against foreign invasion, but only if we can negotiate a deal that allows Doddering Donnie to get a cut for his offshore bank account.

And when a deal can’t be struck, Doddering Donnie will put his hands in the air and say, “we tried” as Putin is handed Ukraine.

Are you saying US should not ask for anything?

That was my impression too. Doddering Donnie is parroting words fed to him by his handlers.
It would have been great if one of those 'journalists' had said, 'Could you help our viewers out by explaining what rare earth means?'

:ROFLMAO:

It's one thing for the US to not honor commitments and leave allies twisting in the wind, we fail those tests frequently. Just ask the Kurds or our former Afghan partners.

But now that big profit is at stake, Moscow better pull its forces out of Ukraine real quickly because the die is cast.

Correct. We should not give ultimatums for our support.

Not that it matters. Donnie is laying the groundwork for abandoning Ukraine to Putin.
When did he give an ultimatum? Zelinski has expressed enthusiasm for US access and investment in Ukraine rare earth deposits. Both presidents see potential for a win-win arrangement. Diversified sources of strategic metals is in America’s national interest. Odd that you’d be opposed to that.

Your spin is always amusing.

Non news.

Just heard a rumor, haven't verified it, that it was Biden who offered Ukraine a deal for rare earths and Trump is only taking credit for the idea.

President Donald Trump in no way indicated support for Ukraine's war against Russia. Never has never will.

"Oh well, that's.. that's... a lot of people don't know this but I'm kind of an expert on this because my house-keeper had the maids keep the house very clean, you know, so earth indoors was rare, right? You gotta like those vacuums that can suck up everything, even if they're being used by a mexican... yeah, I know a lot about rare earth: there's not much of it around and we (use of royal "we" here) have to make sure we get the biggest, most beautiful boxes to hold it in, with soldiers to guard it... in fact, I was thinking we could get some of those shipping containers, armour plate them and maybe, I don't know but the scientists can look into this, maybe waterproof them somehow so they don't rust and let the earth turn to mud.... would that make it rare mud? Is that as valuable? I will have that looked into but mud is, you know, very muddy and makes a mess of carpets and Melania would get mad if I didn't wear galoshes so I didn't track it indoors and I wear really expensive, beautifully made, like, the best most expensive shoes that people want me to wear for them so they can say "As worn by the President" because then I make their sales go high, the highest ever in the history of shoe sales and then they become very rare because there's not enough cows to make all the shoes and... yeah, vacuums, I guess we kind of vacuum the rare dirt up and then... can we see about bigger vacuums, or ones that hold more of this rare dirt so we can then empty it and reclaim the rare bits of it? I've watched Gold Rush, you know, smart people, most of them, but some aren't so smart and they let the gold get washed away in the dirt, which kind of makes THAT dirt rare dirt, right? It's got gold in it...."

Nailed it. It’s like Trump is right here in front of me.

It's Russia's war against Ukraine, not the other way around.
I quoted you. And its debatable if it is Russia's war. NATO allowed it and biden after accepting large funds from Ukraine stood by and watched as Ukraine accepted the challenge.

One thing that we can all agree on; Trump has absolutely no idea what 'rare earth' means.
We know for a documented fact that he did not know what the hell "rare earth" meant back in 2017.

US Allies and friends were ringing alarm bells left and right that China was buying up virtually every lithium mine in the world, that the US needed to get involved or China would corner the market on lithium, the key component in EV batteries.

Trump's State Department response was telling: "If it ain't petrochemical related, we don't give a fuck. Drill, babby drill!".

President Biden managed to claw back about 30% of Chinese purchases, but lithium is now tenfold higher on the rare mineral markets.

The only untapped lithium frontiers in the world remaining are Russia, Greenland and Ukraine. Ukraine is fighting for their country and electronic vehicles are way down the road for them, so it makes sense to trade Ukraine lithium for American missiles.

Win-win.
