Colombian president cancels joint US/Colombian oil production project the day after the Colombian company, Ecopetrol, had announced it was going ahead.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Tuesday ordered the state-run oil company Ecopetrol to cancel a joint venture with a U.S.-owned company that was expected to produce around 90,000 barrels of oil per day, citing environmental concerns.

“I want that operation to be sold, and for the money to be invested in clean energies,” Petro said in a meeting with his Cabinet that was livestreamed on social media. “We are against fracking, because fracking is the death of nature, and the death of humanity.”

Ecopetrol had announced on Monday it would renew its operations with Oxy in the Permian basin, an oil producing region that spans Texas and New Mexico, to develop 91 oil wells, investing over $880 million.

Ecopetrol said its projects in the Permian basin produced an average of 95,200 barrels of oil per day in the first nine months of last year. Operations in the Permian basin made up around 12% of Ecopetol’s total production last year.

Ecopetrol, controlled by the Colombian government but also listed on the New York Stock Exchange, saw its shares rise 2% on Tuesday following the announcement of its deal with Occidental. However, they fell slightly after Petro called for the agreement's cancellation.
"Drill, baby, drill!"

no doubt this is Colombia's way of biting back (with some real teeth) after the refugees/tariffs debacle a week back.

U.S. Travel Association Warns of Economic Tourism Disaster After Thousands of Canadian Tourists Cancel Trips in Protest

from the article in The Travel:

Canadian travelers decided to fight back against an announcement made by the 47th President of the United States on Saturday to impose a 25% tariff on most imported goods from their country, by canceling their vacation trips to the United States in protest.

The travel boycott, in addition to other boycotts raised by Canadians frustrated with the executive order that not only imposes tariffs on Canadian goods but also goods from Mexico and China, is meant to hurt the United States where it counts the most: their tourism economy.
ooh, boy, those U.S travel spots will feel the hurt, but that's okay! trump said to expect "some pain. If they voted for trump, fuck 'em.
However, Canadian travel agencies were the first to witness retaliation from Canadian travelers in the form of canceled vacation trips to the United States. According to Canada’s largest travel agency, Flight Centre, they had witnessed ‘a surge of customers’ canceling their trips to the U.S., and rebooking them to other countries immediately following the announcement.

“Cancelations included bucket-list and milestone experiences valued at over $10,000 CAD,” said a Flight Centre spokesperson.

I can't blame the Canadians, but it does occur to me that, with the exception of Florida, most tourist-friendly areas voted overwhelmingly for Harris.

Dominican Republic or Costa Rica are good alternatives.

I mentioned this in another thread:

Despite the tariffs being "put on hold", after President Musk (and DonOld) "solved" the problem THEY created, there will still be lingering animosity and negative consequences.

To all those voters in the tourist industry who voted for President Musk (and DonOld):

We. Told. You. So.
