Often by burning coal or natural gas. Not petroleum, but still fossil fuels, producing CO2 waste. Nuclear, for all its problems, is probably a better choice. Wind and solar help a little, but they can't be scaled up enough, and hydro only works if you have a river suitable for damming nearby.
