hot status

You've had at least 10 votes, and a resulting score of at least 4.5.

Don't be disheartened if your next few votes bring the score down again - it usually evens out eventually.

The red H generally means that your score is in the upper half of scores on the site. The conditions are that you have to have voting enabled and you have more than 10 votes. There could be more, but they aren't coming to me right now.

Usually, it a red H survives the first couple of weeks, it will be there indefinitely.

That's the criteria - at least ten votes with an average of 4.50 = Red H.

The other thing to add is, if an author locks the score at any time, that story is no longer eligible for a contest (even if the score is unlocked later). By "locking the score" I mean, turning off voting on that story, which you can do at any time.

One of my stories has been given the status of 'Hot', which is very pleasing. What are the criteria for getting that ?
Congratulations on achieving 'H'! It's a nice feeling.

It's worth adding a link in your signature to your stories via the control panel (top right) so people here can find them.

Just because it's gone doesn't mean it's gone for good.

I have 49 published stories. I currently have 18 that have that super-fun red "H." Several stories are at the cusp, right there tiptoeing over and under the 4.5 mark. I'm at 4.49 right now with a story with 247 votes at 46k views. What would another 10 5 votes do for that? What would another 10 3-4 votes do for that? That story had been a red H before, and came down, and went HOT again, and so on and so forth.

It shifts and can come up or down depending on what happens. Maybe you get 1-bombed, there's a sweep, and you're back where your story belongs.

Link it for us! Let's read what you have.

Ole, ole, ole, ole
Ole, ole, ole, ole

Ee-yessa, haha
Ee-yes, girls

Me mind on fire
Me soul on fire, feeling hot, hot, hot
Party people
All around me feeling hot, hot, hot

I've had a story drop down to 4.4 around 30-some votes and then climb back up to 4.6 around 60 votes, it definitely happens!

Congrats on achieving that Red-H.

Kumquatquean's first response to your question is correct.

Now to add to that, as the number of votes increases, the effect of each vote is watered down. A "5" vote out of ten votes total has more impact in changing the average than another 5 when you have 100 votes. That's why some say it will settle down after a while, meaning there will be less drastic shifts in the average.

I caution you to not get too obsessed with the votes, because you can access your own story and vote it a 5 to increase the average. And others can access your story anonymously from multiple computers, voting it a 1 each time (from the same person) to take your story down in the averages. So, that Red-H is a placebo, and not necessarily indicative of any quantifiable indicator of your story quality. The story's rating average is more like a "ballpark estimate" of the majority of those who chose to rate it.

You might write a story and "hit it out of the ballpark", only to have some asshole in the bleachers catch it and throw the ball back in!

Enjoy it while it lasts.

Since I write incest stories and I've been around for a while, my stories tend to see higher view and vote numbers. My advice to every author is not to get in any way invested in your score until your story hits 100 votes. It doesn't mean that much when only 25 people have given you a rating. Just a couple of random negative ratings can tank the score, or a few good ones can suddenly improve it. Once you get to 100 votes your score is more genuinely meaningful and stable. Until then, as hard as it may be, don't count on it or convince yourself that it's the "right" score.

Well, my new one passed the 10 vote threshold so it's officially grasping the red "H" for the time being. That makes 13 of 17.

Damn, If I could have hit a baseball that well I'd probably still be playing a kid's game for a living. Luckily no one at Lit throws an 87 mph slider. See, I could always hit fastballs and I never had a problem with the breaking stuff until it started moving fast enough that I couldn't pick up the spin. "Fastball, I hit very much." Cerano, Major League. Throw me big looping curve at 70 mph, you better duck. But I looked silly on a lot of sliders. And once it gets noticed, everyone in the league knows. It wasn't like high school where there was no advance scouting except box scores in the Friday High School Sports section of the newspapers.

Okay, exaggeration. I'm 59, so I would be retired from playing a kids game. But maybe I'd have a coaching job or something in the front office.

Ditto - honestly, I was starting to think that I wasn't any good at this writing thing, as my stories were all hovering in the 4.3-4.4 range while I was getting started, but soon they'd all climbed up to 4.5 or slightly higher and have stayed there. I've seen a few dip back below and then climb back up over time, and that has made me feel better.

I do wish I had some more eyeballs on the stories, but I knew I wasn't going into a category with a ton of viewers, and since I was doing the opposite of the usual trope, I wasn't going to feed into the most common denominator, but that was part of my point for writing.

I'm glad yours are all over 4.6 now. Love the Penny series!

I must have done something right in my latest because it's only been in published status for a single day and eight readers have favorited it. That feel's good.

If any are curious enough give it a read, here's the link. Party Favors

I'm kinda expecting it to get downvoted eventually because I did use a bit of cliche in that the female lead identifies as lesbian but decides to pursue the male lead. But in my defense, that part of the story is based on real experience and It was actually another Litizen, back in the day. She was in a lesbian relationship and I don't expect that her general orientation has changed. I must admit, I found it quite empowering and pleasant that she ignored other males and yet liked me enough to share time with me. I never expected a sexual encounter with her and was just as surprised as the protagonist here when one actually happened.

Very many thanks for all the information. I had wondered how it happened, because an 800 word that I published a few days ago had the red H this morning, and when I looked a couple of hours later, it had gone. I was astounded and very thankful when it happened, the piece was gritty, and made me feel very "raw" when I'd finished it, and I didn't think that I'd done it very well, and was amazed when readers' reactions told me that it was better than I had thought!

If you have time, I would welcome your feedback. TYIA
