It's a dream that I had but I thought of some ideas.
Former friend and I had a falling as he blames my wife for ruining our friendship.
The former friend (now divorced) has been talking to my wife, trying to take her out on a date. He knows my wife and I are happily married, kind of a douche move. While it is cliche, I do think the friend cheating is something that could work well here, though I agree that tying the reason his marriage fell apart in some way to the wife is a very good idea too (and extremely arousing for the ultimate fucking).

I do think both can be true. Him trying to make amends with the couple but internally wants to get what he's owed or he really wanted to make amends but as time goes on, want what's he owed?
What about a scenario where he wants to take them out for dinner or something but husband couldn't make it. Maybe the friend has something to do with this (somehow)? Which then leads to friend and wife being alone together where he can seduce her or something? Maybe subtle hints.
Or friend actually wants to amend with couple. But there was a hang out where husband had to miss and tells his wife to go with the friend. On their "date", the friend and wife reminisce which makes friend feel like after all the couple did to him, he was owed something and flirts with wife to get into her pants.
Wife tells husband which makes husband realize his true motive. So he then tells wife to play along as they try to plot their "revenge".

Though this could work, too. The first time it's genuinely a coincidence that the husband can't make it, leading to what you describe. Afterwards, the husband is initially annoyed and insists on being there next time. That's when the friend does plot to cut the husband out, and it's after that time that he tells her to plot. Though obviously it goes much further than planned.
