Negative reinforcement is commonly misunderstood. It’s not a negative act to reinforce a behavior. It’s the subtraction of stimuli to reinforce positive behaviors.

grumpy because you’re hungry. Eat some food. Remove hunger. Now you’re not grumpy.

In your example, grumpy behavior was positively reinforced with the food, compounded with the negative reinforcement of removing the hunger.

Example I like to use is seatbelt buckle beeps. If you don’t wear your seatbelt, it beeps, you have to buckle in order to stop the beep.

The hunger example isn’t wrong but considering the context of brat behavior, I just wanted to point out that you’d be encouraging it
