Do 'real life' stories ever do well here?

Obviously, for the most part, this is a site for erotic fiction and it's wonderful for it. The range and breadth of stories is incredible, and you can find something to suit every taste. But do true stories - actually retellings of genuine events - ever do well?

Obviously I've a bit of a vested interest here as I've posted a few of my own 'real life' encounters, but I'm wondering if it's something generally frowned upon, or if there's actually a readership looking for it.

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts!

I think describing a real life event in great detail with the intention of turning the reader on, can sometimes make it seem like a work of fiction to some people. That said, as a woman, I love detail as it stimulates my brain (and other parts!).

If you flag them as "true stories" they might not get published, because that's actually contra to Lit policy.

Whether they do well comes down to the quality of telling. Just because they're true is a bit of a "so what?" You might be crap at telling stories, so it doesn't matter whether they're true or not, if they're not told well.

Also, how will anyone know for sure? Odds are, if you say it's true, people will say bullshit, that's made up, that couldn't happen. Likewise, I've got stories here which are complete fiction, but people have commented, "Thank you both for sharing," as if they think the story is autobiographical and the characters are real people.

It all comes down to the quality of the story-telling - whether it's true or not is actually irrelevant.

Most of my pieces here are real life experiences and I get mostly favourable comments/reviews. Although the temptation when writing is to go into too much detail and back story.

I have 15 stories published, 13 real life and 2 fictional. The fictional are the highest rated. People hate reality. The stories that are the most ridiculous stupid bullshit do the best on Lit.

I've read some stories that are framed as true stories that the narrator had lived through. The ones that rated the highest were the ones that seemed the least likely to actually be true. Not because of the content, because the content was mostly believable. But it was because of how contradictory the stories were to other stories in the authors line up, or because the author mentioned that this new one was written because of reader feedback.

I find most stories that purport to be true (bearing in mind that claimed true stories aren't allowed on Lit) tend to be clunkily written, often along the lines of "Let me tell you about myself. I'm in my 30s but I keep in good shape. My wife Jenna is slim and petite and has curly chestnut hair, green eyes and amazing 40DD tits that I love sucking." and go on from there, usually pure male fantasy.

Fiction needs the boring bits and various other details to be implied, so it feels real, but not actually put in, because that makes it boring. Or even unrealistic. A bit like in movies where they need horses to neigh and whinny so the audience think it's an immersive real scene, despite in reality horses usually being silent - but that feels less 'realistic'.

Out of my stories there's about half a dozen that are essentially real, though changed for impact, or making a coherent story, or producing a better ending. Or where many details got changed to protect people's identity, but the story is the same. Tidied-up reality, making for better fiction - I hope!

Best to write the story as 'based on a true 'event. Even then you might catch flack. I did write a story that almost exactly followed what happened when I came home to find my first wife had left and the aftermath. I was told many times in the comments that certain events could not have happened as written and began to counter what an attorney had said. Other events were likewise discounted quickly and loudly. I found writing about the even cathartic. Then I found deleting the story from my body of work equally as cathartic.

I published a series where the first two chapters were based on something that actually happened to me, but the rest of the tale was fiction.

This was actually the very first thing I ever published on Literotica, and the first piece of feedback I received was scathing. I nearly stopped before I'd started. I'm glad I didn't.
