I think the SF earthquake and fire in 1909 was probably the biggest disaster because of everything that was irretrievably ruined/lost/destroyed, but this one is going to be a close second.

I thought about that too but it seems the looming amount of monetary loss to all levels of the local economy and the state tax base could be way more. Some of those fires are still at zero containment last I heard with thousands of homes and structures already destroyed. I think politically the impact could be much greater as well.

The bare land will cost >$1 million per lot and the cleanup costs will be horrific. Add in the construction costs (permits + fees + regulatory requirements + Coastal Commission approval + new mandatory fire prevention/climate change/whatever the fuck else is "new" construction requirements + building costs) and you're looking at $5+ million for a 3 bdrm 2 bth 2000 sq ft home on .3 acres.

No deals to be had at those prices. Which is why you'll see a lot of insurance companies paying off claims and taking title to the property while the prior owners buy homes elsewhere.

We went through the same thing here after the Thomas Fire devastated the hillside homes of the affluent. 7 years later there are still vacant lots which no one will buy because the overall costs to build exceed buying a larger and more lavish home elsewhere.
