541 people per 100,00 are in prison. That's the fifth-highest incarceration rate in the world.

And it is not, I'm sure, because Americans are more crime-prone than anybody else.

And there are idiots in this country -- there are idiots on this board -- who think our system is "soft on crime."

Some judges are elected -- is their performance record any better?
Not if they are elected on a political platform.

In many countries they are appointed by a panel of fellow judges and any party political affiliation would immediately disqualify them. Judges should be impartial from party politics.

Too many American commit violent crimes. Build more prisons.
Here. Let me google this for you:

What is the cost of putting someone in a federal prison for a year?

How much is a year at Harvard?

investing in our citizens: preschool versus prison time

Violent crime is a problem. Perhaps it should be called Capitalism where the far right lives to move their money upward into their own pockets because Supply Side Economics doesn't work, has never worked nor will it ever work; except for those at the very top. These links are simply a different point of view where those who can afford to pay for worthy, community-building endeavors PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE. When we invest in children and early childhood programs we end up with fewer "Contemptible Fools". It's kind of a matter of perspective and education.

Don't be part of the problem, you asshole.

In the USA a life sentence means what it says.
In the UK a life sentence means 2 minutes on the naughty step.

The re-offending rate here is incredibly high and we'd benefit from having more prison places so repeat offenders could be kept where they belong.

You would not benefit from being more like the U.S. in that regard.
