Greenland is significant to North American Security, so the USA has always kept Greenland close.

Newfoundland & Labrador were also strategically significant in North American Naval and Air Defence. Goose Bay AFB and USNB Argentia.

So much so that the USA brokered the deal which saw that British Colony join Canada in 1949.

The USA has considered aquisition of both territories in the past.

Its neither new nor crazy.
