Governor Michael Hastings was running for Senate, anyone with eyes could see that the way his advertising campaign had swung into effect. he was hitting news shows, radio, bill boards, going door to door, but it was early days yet. At 47 he was in good shape taking very good care of himself which helped with the heavy workload of still performing as Governor while pushing his campaign. His wife was helping of course as were his two kids, but most of this was on his shoulders. It required late night and working weekends and he needed something to spice things up. Michael Hastings was a good man, he was faithful to his wife, a loving father, hard but fair on his staffers and would make an amazing Senator ... or thats what the news and the rest of the world thought. But like most people Hastings had a dark side, one he didn't get to let out often and when he had he had to pay a lot of money to keep it secret from everyone. But it had been worth it. But the last time had been years ago and he had been feeling the itch rising for months now. To busy to go scratch it he had instead thrown himself into his work.
Today he was at the Governors mansion working in his office in a white shirt, unbuttoned at the top and black slacks and shoes. He had his head in one hand reading through the latest polling figures when there was a knock on his door.
"Come in." He called.
His secretary, Brenda Cole stuck her pretty head around the door and smiled. "Sorry, Governor, but there's a Terry Kline to see you?"
"Terry?! Send him in!" Michael stood with a huge grin as his old friend walked in with an equally big grin on his face.
The two men embraced in the middle of the office before Hastings gestured for Terry to take a seat while he got them some drinks.
"Terry, hell, it's been years, how the hell are you?" The Governor asked handing the man a whiskey.
"Been doing well, got my own business now and I just made a considerable contribution to your war chest." Kline smiled sipping the drink. "Mmm, only the best, huh?"
"You know it. So what can I do for you?" Hastings took a seat across from his friend and waited.
"You remember my daughter?"
"Yes of course, I think she was, what, 10 when I last saw her?"
"12, anyway, she is now 18 and wants to to go into politics. She has been following your term as Governor with great enthusiasm and is always going on about how you will make a great Senator. So ... I was wondering ... is there anyway you could find her a spot on your staff for a few months? Just to give her a taste for the real thing? I know it's a lot to ask."
Governor Hastings sat back with a smile and waved his drink in the air. "It's not a problem Terry, really it isn't. I'm sure I can find her something to do, we're always needing volunteers. Look, have her come over tomorrow ok? I'll interview her as I would any potential staffer, that might give her a thrill, then put her to work somewhere."
Terry smiled and finished his drink before standing. "Thanks, Mike, I knew I could count on you."
"Just as long as I can count on your vote." Hastings laughed shaking his friends hand. "Have her here about 10am, I can get her sorted before the real work starts for the day. I can't wait to meet her." He said escorting his friend to the door.
"She will be thrilled. Thanks again, Mike."
With that Terry left the Governor alone who chuckled after the door was shut. Terry was a good guy, but soft, he would never make it in politics and Michael figured his daughter would be the same. He would give the girl the thrill of being interviewed by him then squirrel her away in the post room or some low level position where he wouldn't have to worry about her again.
