Red Texas counties have their knickers in a twist. Greg Abbott wanted school vouchers passed during the last legislative session because one of his cherished dreams is to absolutely gut Texas education.

Specifically, he wanted to drain public school funds via vouchers to subsidize well-to-do students at white-only private schools (yes yes technically they have "colorblind" admission policies, but all the "scholarship" money is given to white students *wink *wink *nudge).

The Bluest mega-counties in Texas (covering megacities Dallas, Houston and San Antonio) have opposed the governor's crass money grab for years.

But in 2023, they've suddenly received support from the reddest, most Trumpian counties in Texas!

Why?

Texas motherfukkin' High School Football!

Texas Football is basically publicly funded and is based on student populations and state and county allocated dollars. Abbott's voucher scam would drain both students and funding from Texas football programs.

You heard that tired old saying "Don't Mess With Texas"?
Well.....Abbott is finding out there is something worse than that...He's messin' with Texas Football and is getting hammered from all sides of the political spectrum.

Abbott is attempting to reconvene the legislature in special session this month solely to pass his voucher scam....and red Texas counties are tellin' ole Greg "now wait just a minnit young man!" They don't want or need no stinkin' vouchers

It will be interesting to see how this political battle plays out. Abbott has even tried playing the Hispanic card....poor impovershed wetb....errr, Hispanics will get a better education at his private acadamies. Nossir, his constituents replied." They gonna play football for one of the megaschool football teams, be on TV for Friday Night Lights and then get Division 1 scholarships thankew very much!"

Football Uber Alles in Texas!

Interesting article, for sure. Football truely is king in Texas (and I love football too.)

What Abbot is doing is disgusting but over the last ten fifteen years I've lost a lot of respect for football fans.

Not enough Republican lawmakers showed up in Austin today to establish a quorum, a clear rebuke to Greg Abbott.

Abbott's billionaire buddies (Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks) who appear to profit the most from vouchers, demanded Abbott schedule a FOURTH special legislative session next week.

#VoucherScam is trending on Twitter.

Abbott finally got a quorum in the Texas statehouse and got everyone to vote on the record about school vouchers.

Final vote: Texas Football 84, Voucher Scam 63

A pissed-off Abbott declared he and his good buddy Donald J. Trump would help primary the heretics.

No Voucher Scam for you, Governor!

If at fourth you don't succeed...

"Governor" Greg Abbott announced an unprecedented FIFTH "special session" of the Texas state legislature to consider exactly ONE piece of legislation: Yup, the School Voucher Scam once again.

Abbott's two billionaire buddy donors will not rest until Texas public education (and Texas high school football funding) is eviscerated.

Twenty two REPUBLICAN legislators have gone publicly on record (!!!) to tell Abbott that his legislation is Dead on Arrival, but this kabuki theater continues.

Abbott refuses to accept the notion that Texas high school football is moar popular than Jesus Christ in the Lone Star State.

The once proud state of Tennessee passed similar legislation by ONE vote two weeks ago after a legislator who was a bird Colonel in the Tennessee National Guard was promised a promotion to Brigadier General in exchange for changing his vote.

I wonder if Abbott will dangle this sort of carrot this time around.

Tennessee: bill lee 'disappointed' that his own school vouchers bill has effectively died for this year

In Nov. 2023, Gov. Lee unveiled his proposal to expand school vouchers. The proposal aimed to expand a voucher program to all 95 counties in Tennessee, allowing tax money to cover the tuition of a student going to a private school.

the Senate and the House couldn't overcome their differences over school testing (not that using public tax money to help fund private schools was a problem, go figure):
Essentially, the Senate said they had no issue with how schools administered tests. However, the House wanted to see pullback from end-of-course exams and other tests to increase instruction time.

Texas billionaires "primaried" every single Republican who voted against scammy school vouchers back in March. They managed to defeat about 75% of the incumbents, spending about $50,000 for every 3,000 votes.

Sadly it looks like we'll have school vouchers in public schools next year in Texas.

Can we just give them to Mexico?

Maybe the US should try relegation and promotion for states.

Mississippi and West Virginia would obviously be relegated in the first season because they are failed states. But Texas could be the other state relegated based on an electric grid that doesn’t work and a governor who is a showboating clown.

Puerto Rico, DC and American Samoa are favorites for winning promotion.

Abbott has avoided going overboard like DeSantis on many occasions. There is a reason he is appreciated.

School choice is coming to America. Plyer vs Doe has long-term consequences.
