please help me understand this

Yeah, on some stories I got a lot of personal attacks and deleted those. I leave them these days, it shows their issues more than mine. Many people can't separate the writer from the characters, I don't know why.
There's a fine line though. I don't mind negative comments. To a certain point, the let me know the reader was vested in what I wrote, cared about my characters, and was pissed at something I did. that's valid feedback.

Only comments I have ever deleted were either personal attacks(1), and a couple of guys that got into a political debate over my use of the term socialist in one of my stories. Come one, go fight it out, but in the comments on a story. LOL

I'd still delet the personal attack ones. My fear is I'd re-read one and be in a bad mood and prove to all my readers what a total bitch I really am. 🤣

I delete comments that are offensive thx to personal attacks, kinkshaming, or bullying of any other kind without fair criticism to provide redeeming social value. It’s not that high a bar.

It's obvious to me based on some of the comments I've gotten that there are a few readers on Literotica who seem to read what they want to read in a story rather than what has actually been written. There's no way to change them. You'll just have to do the same thing I do when I see a comment like that. I mutter, "How the hell did they get that out of the words I wrote?, and then smile at the good comments. The good ones are like the sucker you got when you went to the dentist or the doctor as a kid.
Oh! So, everyone already knew this problem existed before I was even born, and then called me crazy and shit when I came on the forums and pointed it out.

That checks out, for sure.

I'm sure every author with more than a couple stories under their belt has seen similar comments, so yes they would be aware. I can tell you that the same situation existed long before the internet. It just wasn't as public.

The real problem is that today you don't even have to try to offend some people. They'll just interpret what you say or write so that it does offend them. Funny how some people seem to enjoy being offended by anything and everything and unhappy, isn't it?
