MC and his wife are taking a trip to Italy (I think). Wife has wanted this for a long time - a return to where her ancestors are from. On the trip they meet a woman and her daughter. I think the daughter is a college student and her mom is a similar age to the main character and his wife. Wife is occupied at times with finding her family so the MC and the mom and daughter spend a lot of time together. They start bonding. At one point the daughter is accosted by some local boys - the MC rescues her before anything bad happens to her. They talk to a local lawyer to make sure they don’t get in legal trouble for MC defending the daughter.
Eventually, the MC’s wife says she wants a divorce to stay with her family. She’s glad MC found someone else. MC and mom end up together - daughter is thrilled to have a step-father looking out for her.
