The Setting
This version of Wonderland is a collection of fairy tale kingdoms that mimic Europe in the 1600’s and would be recognized by a character out of The Three Musketeers, but there are aspects of an early Steampunk culture. As with the original story there are many amazing creatures and magical occurrences. So there are swashbuckling adventures, steam engines and other strange machines and of course fantasy magic. Think of Wonderland like a Renaissance Faire with a variety of cultures and ideas coexist and even blend. Gypsies perform for an audience of knights and nobles while they drink and talk of the latest steam driven technology.
Random facts to give you an idea of the setting….
It is a world where a young nobleman will walk about town in his tall boots, large hat, and puffy shirt with a rapier at his side to deal with ruffians. This same noble will don heavy armor, shield and lance, and mount a heavy warhorse to deal with monsters in the country side. Even without the current crisis there is plenty of adventure around for the reckless and brave.
Among the technologies and ideas that don't fit into the 1600's are the railroads, the postal system, and flying machines. Galleons are the primary form of sea travel with inventors and engineers looking to build steam powered versions. With so many ideas, inventions and magic around there are universities in every major city studying ways to combine these powerful forces. There are factories and workshops where mass production and custom work occurs.
The Cows that graze the many pastures of Wonderland are a whole different breed of dairy cows. While they're around the same size and enjoy eating grass they reproduce at a higher rate and when milked they give high quality healthy milk that doesn’t need to be processed. Also cows give flavored milk, and besides standard there are cows that give chocolate and strawberry milk.
Because of the dangerous monsters that roam the countryside of Wonderland farmers and country gentlemen have bred Spanish Mastiff, a large breed of dog, originating from foreign shores. The livestock guardian dog was brought to Wonderland by an unknown source, but was whole hardily embraced by the people, and now they're common in the four kingdoms. They've also been bred with a number of local dogs and even wolves to produce and sub-breeds.
Much to the displeasure of many farmers elven children have befriended many of these dogs to gain access to their farms. While they'll chase off even the fiercest of predators, a playful child bring gravy covered treats is a completely different matter. This has led to many estate owners hiring young elves to tend to their dogs.
While there are a variety of fruit trees that flourish in Wonderland with its long springs and summers many aren't the typical variety people from the other side of the looking glass would expect to find. There are typical ones like apples, pears, cherries, and even bananas in the more southern regions. More exotic trees grow slices of cake, cookies, and muffins. Some trees have even been known to sprout mugs of coffee, balls of yarn, and wrapped chocolate bars.
These trees are a prize for anyone who has them on their land and if well cared for will provide a fine harvest. Many are on estate land, but people regularly find them growing in the wild, and it is possible to live off the land while never really having to eat anything unfamiliar to you from your more civilized life style.
Fantasy Races are not limited to the Books
Wonderland has no shortage of interesting creatures that populate the world. Living chess pieces battle on boards throughout the kingdoms to the cheers of the crowds while anthropomorphic animals that stand upright and walk and talk, and live among humans. Mystical creatures like gryphons, unicorns, and dragons are more than legend.
Most villages are somehow connected with a noble's estate, and supply the manpower and material to make them run. Even the most minor nobles have a life style that would be considered decadent to most, so these estates and castles require a massive supply of food and spirits. There is a human and animal peasantry that works the large estates of the noble classes, so there is a cast of tens of thousands to choose from never mind all those who populate court.
The forests are populated by a friendly breed of wood elf that has no problem poaching on a noble's land. Sexually adventurous they willingly share pleasures of the flesh with humans and in the more rural areas intermarry. Elven long swords are highly valued because they never lose their razor sharp cutting edge and many nobles in the cavalry will pay well for them.
The woods are also home to several species of human size fairies known for their mischievous nature and love of fine wines. The can be told apart by their different wing colors, and females continually outnumber the males. More nobles than would care to admit have had children with fairies. Most fairies are fond of children and will regularly leave treats in the woods for them.
Though once forest dwellers gnomes now largely live in various villages around the four kingdoms. These pointy hatted craftsmen are handy to have, and regularly tend gardens of nobles and merchants alike, and their gnome "garden shacks" are a common site. The second largest profession is metal workers, and gnomish pistols are very accurate. Many are flocking to the cities to take part in the construction of many new wonders.
