This was one experience I tried and actually gave me a lot to think about.
Between two relationships I had a period of celibacy of about 19 months. I didn't masturbate - at first I didn't had the urge to do it - but when my libido returned and I could again get an erection I started to challenge myself not to masturbate and it actually worked.
