Agree. I can't recall the last time I (or anybody else) transitioned from being a man who walks on land into a mermaid who swam in the sea and later went on to lay an egg (her son), but somehow I was able to write about it.I think sometimes too much emphasis is put on the importance of personal experience. In my view, imagination is much more important. What makes a story work is not realism, but verisimilitude -- the use of just enough detail to create the appearance of reality, rather than the actual mimicking of reality.
