He went down fighting to the bitter end. I'm surprised the courage he showed in standing to the end. We won't see the likes of such a colorful leader again, I'm afraid.

He was one cool dude.

Wow.

Like the US or other western countries have never committed any terrorist acts.

Wow.

You're lucky that you're already so poorly thought of on the GB; otherwise, you'd have a hell of a time living this thread down.

ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo at the 16 May 2011 Press Conference regarding the situation in Libya © ICC-CPI

Today 16 May 2011, International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo requested ICC judges to issue arrest warrants against Muammar Abu Minya Gaddafi, Saif Al Islam Gaddafi and the Head of the Intelligence Abdullah Al Sanousi from crimes against humanity committed in Libya since February 2011.

The Office gathered direct evidence about orders issued by Muammar Gaddafi himself, direct evidence of Saif Al Islam organizing the recruitment of mercenaries, and direct evidence of the participation of Al Sanousi in the attacks against demonstrators. Additionally the Office documented how the three held meetings to plan the operations.

The evidence shows that civilians were attacked in their homes; demonstrations were repressed using live ammunition, heavy artillery was used against participants in funeral processions, and snipers placed to kill those leaving the mosques after the prayers.

The evidence shows that persecution is still ongoing in the areas under Gaddafi control. Gaddafi’s forces prepare lists with names of alleged dissidents. They are being arrested, put into prisons in Tripoli, tortured and made to disappear. “These are not just crimes against Libyans, they are crimes against humanity as a whole,” the Prosecutor said.

This is the first case in Libya. The Office will further investigate allegations of massive rapes, war crimes committed by different parties during the armed conflict that started at the end of February, and attacks against sub-Saharan Africans wrongly perceived to be mercenaries. “There will be no impunity for such crimes in Libya,” said the Prosecutor.

A man alone cannot defend a nation when the citizens uprise against dictatorship and oppression. Just as in Iraq, instead of dying for their country, his military stripped off their uniforms and ran like cowards.
No matter who our president is, left or right and what public opinion is- abandoning our leadership is one thing you will never see from our military.

I bet you would if the world's militaries were closing in without hope of victory. I don't admire Gaddafi, he's a terrorist thug and I'm glad he will end up at the international criminal court but unfortunately I can't see how this conflict has done justice by anyone and I would like to see Cameron, Sarkozy and Obama stand trial too.

Now we're about to be left with a new government which also acts as a dictatorship but which is friends with the west (yippee) despite including islamic militants and, quite possibly, Al Q members.

We even celebrated the possibility of putting Tripoli under siege if needs be - this was yet another illegal war fought by the west for the west. It has nothing to do with protecting civilians or, I daresay, enabling democracy to prevail and we've killed many for the sake of it.

But you still have his three sons, Stogie, Smegma, and Sploog al-Islam Go-Daffy.

That comment is the one and only one that you have ever been right about.

George W Bush, for one, is an out and out war criminal.

They also won't open fire on the people en masse. If the President (whoever he is) comes to blows against the populace the military may not abandon their posts but they will certainly divide, which will be just as bad.

What makes you think that? If they were trained to decide what's right, there would be no war to start with.

It takes a hell of a lot of confidence in humanity to think governments couldn't manipulate the forces to do their will on others just because it's at home and not abroad. I think the vast majority would do exactly what they're told.

Kadaffi didn't go down fighting, he went into hiding like Hussein (not Barack Hussein Obama, yet; the other Hussein) did. Plus, it's not over yet.

The troops' own families would start rioting and would be put at risk. The troops would break ranks to protect their families. Plus the astounding losses suffered by the troops against an armed American populace would break their resolve quickly.

Remember Iraq? Now imagine that times 9,000.

Perhaps but we weren't talking about the murders of hundreds of thousands of people by the libyan government, I thought we were comparing the situations.

BTW the same applies in terms of population to armed forces ratio worldwide.
