Anyone notice how more and more message / comment boards around the internet are censored? More and more "report this post" buttons on comment boards. More and more rules about what is "allowed" to be expressed and what is not. More and more control and limits on expression and opinion.

Wasn't the point of the internet to allow people to express whatever they really think about something? To get around the censorship of the mainstream press and conventional thought and speech controls? To allow truly free exchange of ideas and divergent points of view. Why is the public tolerating this growing trend to censorship, limits and control?

I for one, will not post at a moderated board, nor one that has "report this post" buttons, etc, but more importantly I will no longer even visit those sites or read their articles. Is it time to get a movement going to boycott such sites?

It seems with every passing year the hope and promise of the internet to democratize life and promote real freedom is going the way of the dodo bird.

What can be done?

Germany got around that stuff with the Enigma machine.

It's all in the codes.

People who set up their own boards are perfectly within their rights to set up their own rules. You've already said you won't go to those sites, so what's the problem?

You're free to express yourself however you want. However that doesn't give you the freedom to do whatever you wish with someone else's website.

This is the only board I can express things that would get me kicked off almost anywhere else.

I have no problems with moderators, personally. They're not curbing freedom of thought. They're curbing disruptive behavior.

This site is moderated

Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out

The people who set up the messageboards also have their freedom of expression and that's how they exercise it. Same way the newspaper is free not to print your letters. If you don't like it, find a mostly-unmoderated MB like this one, or set up a new one.

I'm thinking, when they set up the internet, they didn't give a shit about "allowing" people to express their thoughts. That wasn't in the business plan. It's kind of been a wild west atmosphere and slowly the townspeople are deciding they don't like assholes.

nothing can be done. you have been spoiled on the general board and will live the rest of your cyber life doomed to compare all other boards to her.

No. Some message boards are policed by bots. The following comment was removed from a message board by a bot. I posted, God spreads glory around by stuffing diverse prizes inside each bag of CRACKER JACK.

The bot saw CRACKER and I was gone.

On the otherhand the principal of Mark Twain Middle School in Virginia removed all of Twain's books from the library as unfit for kids to read.
