The year is 2037. The world has become almost purely digital. That is to say, the internet is something almost anyone has direct access to, thanks to cybernetics technology. Cyborgs are commonplace. But with the advent of true globalization of information, came a new form of criminal activity. In the early 21st century, computers were fairly lowtech, as were the methods used to hack into them. But with cybernetics allowing for computers built directly into the brain, it became possible to actually hack into a person.
Japanese Intelligence Section Nine was one of many groups formed to combat this growing criminal threat. A group of specially chosen soldiers, police officers, and other personal trained in various methods used to take care of hackers in this new global society. Even so, many people still commit such crimes.
Major Motoko Kusanagi, a female cyborg of unknown origin, is the main force at Section Nine. Alongside her, a longterm friend, Batou. A personally recruited detective, Togusa. A super-hacker, Ishikawa. A sniper, Saito, and his usual partner, Pazu. Many others. They're used to dealing with odd cases. This one may prove to be their oddest yet.
Something's been happening that is puzzling. Random hacks into information networks are almost completely untracable, even by The Major, who is the sole heir to the sentient information gathering program known as Puppetmaster. No one has found the perpetrator of the crime either, and the strangest thing is that nothing's been stolen. But Section Nine is working on finding out what's going on.
When they finally get a lead, Batou and The Major are dispatched to find the criminal. Little do they know what's really in store for them, as they enter the abandoned network of tunnels deep under part of Old Tokyo.
They are being watched. Their every move is being followed, surveyed. Their finding the place was no accident. Deep within the tunnels lay an old fallout shelter. In it, a young man sits at an old military mainframe, typing away. "Finally. Amazing what it takes to get their attention."
He pet the nearby cat, then ran a hand through his hair. "Patience, Althena. They'll be here soon. Then maybe we can get to the bottom of the little problem with those cyberpunks we can't find."
